I've got a yota 22RE that I can't get the crank nut off of. I've used the biggest air wrench that I could get ahold of and it still won't budge. Any suggestions?

I have a chain wrench that has a 3 foot handle, you put a breaker bar on it aginst the floor and then the biggest breaker bar and a four foot piece of tube on the bolt, i had a 3.0 that would not give up. in you could have broke it off with the starter.

What kind of impact gun are you using ?

if it is a decent Ingersol Rand, oil the piss outta it, crank air pressure on the line up to about 110, let the compressor build up to max pressure, soon as it shuts off, give it hell.

braek away torque on that bolt is increadble, you wouldn't think 116ftlb would be that tough to break loose.

What I can also suggest, install two bolts in opposing holes on the flywheel end of the crank, use a lever bar to hold crank while a buddy pulls with the breaker bar in the balancer bolt.

If it were In the vehicle, 19mm short socket, breaker bar against the frame, hit the starter, game over.

good luck, and be careful !

Thanks for the replys, I am using a Ingersol wrench at 150psi. I tried the breaker bar first then wacked it with a sledge to break it loose but no-go. I'll try what you have suggested. The engine was out of a truck already when I got it. This is a winter project to put in my 4runner in the spring. I've got time. Scott

Yo,
Use a penetrating oil that cuts rust. Wally World PB Blaster sprayed onto the nut, so it runs behind the big washer head every hour for the whole day, will work after a overnight soaking. Keep working on it with the Ingersol and the PB Blaster.

Spanner wrench on flywheel side, and a breaker bar on the nut is how I would do it.

Kevin, liked the starter method, that's a new one on me, thanks

just happened to me, and my chain wrench was at the shop to lazy to get it, 3.0 head bolts thread into crank, piece of tube between them to the fllor and me jumping on the breaker bar broke it lose it did bend the head bolts.

Yea, the starter thing works great, just not on a Honda! The engine runs opposite the thread on the bolt, so you just tighten the hell out of it!

nut

I have removed a lot of these and the easy way is to take a cheap impact sock, drive it on the nut(I'm sure it is marred by now), tack it in a couple of spot with a welder. Place the ground on the pulley so the current isn't passing throught the rest of the engine. More than likely you will be able to turn it off by hand as soon as you are done. (It is the heat). This can be done with the engine in the vehicle also.
Works!!
