I am looking at opening up my 88 22re toyota exhaust. Looking for some input on which header, muffler, and pipe size will benefit best and not sound to much like a honda bumble bee (although i do under stand it is a 4cyl.) My cat is in pretty ruff shape so i am going to possibley gut it or just delete it and weld in an o2 bung. Also i am planning on doing a k&n drop in filter. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

On my last rig I gutted the cat and ran a flowmaster 50 series. It sounded pretty good. Definately not loud or rice.

get a fake cat, and a cherry bomb turbo. flowmasters sound good as well. only go the glasspack route if you dont care :fuck-you:. think i went 2.5" can't remember. but mine cuts off behind the cab, im still thinking about dual staks. a magnaflow high flow cat, with a flowmaster and a y split

You want 2 1/2" exhaust. My 79 had an unknown header with a flowmaster. It sounded good but not too ricey. When it was cold out and it was warming up the cam was unbelivable. Brrrrup. Brrrrrup. Brrrup.

if your gonna do the exhaust. go to engnbldr and order another cam. I've heard fitment issues with the pacesetter header but have gotten it to work. LCE offers exhaust upgrades but their shit is $$$$. best bet is to run a fake cat, magnaflow cat, and go with a turbo style muffer or a flowmaster. 2 1/2" seems to work best for our 4cyl's

FYI for anyone actually wanting the bumblebee sound, try cutting the Y off th factory exhaust pipe, and running 2, 2"? pipes, and Cherrybombs, straight out the back under the bumper. Prevous owner had done this to my 84 SR5. It sounded good , throttling in the mudholes we wheeled in. It also was fun to back up close to a brick wall and make some noise downtown back in my hellraising days!!

Can I buy the 2.5" pipe pre bent and with fittings somewhere or does it need to be custom?

I have the LCE header w/ 2.25" pipe teh whole way, open cat (Cat Daddy?) and Cherry Bomb Tubro muffler. Sound isn't bad.
Yeah plenty rattly when started up cold.
There are "cat-back" kits available.
But personally if your truck isn't stock suspension/body etc I'd just have it custom made. I think I paid like $200, just took the muffler to the shop with me.

Yeah I believe custom is the way to go. Now the question is 2.25 or 2.5? Any performance gain in the two? Or just sound

In my opinion 2.5 is to big on a stock motor. 2.25 is really as big as you'd need. 2.5 can actually hinder performance but that goes into the gray area of if back pressure matters. Also the bigger the pipe the lower the sound, but not necessarily louder.

LC engineering says that 2.25" is the way to go. The make a great header in my opinion it is hard to beat it and the price is pretty nice too. I can say that from my experience with all of this you need to match the flow of the intake to the exhaust to get the most out of either group of modifications.
