Believe I'm going to have to do the head gasket on my 93 pickup soon (208k or so). Getting lots of air in the coolant and recently it'll bubble the radiator/smell like exhaust when I crack the rad cap.

No reason to believe it's ever been overheated or anything's warped but I've thought about putting a new engnbldr head/cam on while I'm at it. No plans to boost the engine or go crazy with it, what else should I do while I've got it torn down? Water/oil pumps come to mind, p/o said he did timing with metal guides/rollers so I'll verify that. What else? Any reason for ARP studs or anything like that for a mild use engine? Done a lot of searching but haven't found much between straight r&r and people building $$ motors.

Very good possibility it's your front cover also the chain likes ware through but if you go that far I would deck the head anyway I say water pump and oil pump new timing chain and sprockets and front cover deck the head new gasket and roll out

I had the same problems with mine I went ahead and checked the barings wile I had the oil pan off and I ended up with a total rebild

Previous owner said he did timing w the metal guides/rollers and I've put 10k on it since I got it. Only coolant missing is what gets pushed into the overflow (seems like hg leak is letting cylinders pressurize water jacket). Oil is still clean. He also said he did the oil pan gasket, maybe it's wishful thinking that the bottom end is alright.

Really wondering about engnbldr heads. A new head/valvetrain for $3-450 sounds like it might be worth it, just don't know anyone who's actually dealt with them. Appreciate the responses.

When I blew my head gasket it was obvious. Experienced surging idle, milky oil, and could not keep coolant in the radiator, whenever it'd surged out it'd come. If your unsure, it'd be best to check it and replace it for the heck of it.

Ya mine did same thing oil was great and it ran great but I could come out 2 days after running it and the radiator was still presheriz ed ended up being bottom side of the head gasket

I've been opening the cap almost every time I park it to releive the pressure. Think I'm gonna do it soon so I don't pop a hose or something.
