22re problems

First off my check engine light is on in my 88 toyota pickup, the mechanic said he couldn't read it??? It runs perfectly fine around town and on the high way, but when you exit the highway (after constant higher RPM the motor seems to "pulsate". Was wondering if anybody knew anything about this. Once you tap the pedal it idles fine.
