OK i got a 93 toyota pickup that did not run. found no compression. when i started tearing it apart found pistons were shot and rings fell apart. I had the whole bottom end rebuilt (bored/new pistons/new crank) got the engine back from t-hoff bolted the head on started into the timing and noticed that the chain that I got from engnbldr.com wasnt long enough. I compared it to the old one and it was shorter. Compared it to one from advance and it was the same length. So my old chain was longer than both. Finally figured out that in 84 there was a longer chain used. Is it safe to assume that atleast my block is older? If so how can i confirm this. Also assuming that the motor is from an 84, will my new timing cover that i got for a 93 still work. likewise with the oilpump, water pump and the clutch? (all new parts that I got thinking i had a motor from a 93) Im hoping that someone has run into this or knows some more about it and can help me.

Call ted at engbldr and ask them about it, they know these blocks in and out, and esp the deal w/ the chain fitment, since you bought the chain from them, they will help you out. Nice guys.

does your head have pear shaped ports like these?

if so then you have the new head if its one small round and on big round like this

you have the old head
the new shorter block has these mickey mouse ears on the drivers side on the bottom little behind the dip stick

the old will not match up with the new so only new head and block will work or only old block and head will. so if the motor was running at some point it was either all pre84 or all post85
the timeing cover will not work but the water and oil pumps will(i think)

i had to go through this crap when i built my 22re so anything else let me know, also yotatech is very helpfull

The 21-ru used a different timming chain. I can't remember if it's longer or shorter though. My buddy wen't though hell because of it though

i definitely have round ports and no "mickey mouse ears" so i have the older one. Yes my old chain is about two links longer. does anybody want to buy a brand new lime green timing cover for a 93 22re since im not going to be able to return the one ive already painted??

New timing cover?
Let me guess - the timing chain guides broke and the chain ate a hole in the driver's side of the cover?

nah the original had a small hole that would expose one of the oil pan bolts threads. definitely still usable, i just decided that i would spend 50 bucks and get a nice clean new one but one of the plastic guides was broken

but one of the plastic guides was broken

classic
I asume you got the metal-backed guides from EB? Only way to go if you don't want to do this again lol.
My 4Runner had the "marbles on startup and hhigh RPMs" when I got it too.

yea i got the metal backed ones. i figured out that the water pump, oil pump and clutch will not work with this motor. i love suprises like this

i know that the clutch i bought assuming my engine was the original 93 will not work with this motor. could i get a flywheel from a 93 and be able to use the clutch? I think it will bolt right up but Im no expert so im lookin to find out if this will work. i want to do this because it would be cheaper to get a new flywheel then it would be to pay shipping both ways on exchanging my marlin crawler clutch

ive got the smaller diameter clutch kit for sale if your interested? you truck might have the 93 trans in it they will bolt up to the old 22res. the newer clutch and flywheel is bigger than the old
