does your head have pear shaped ports like these?

if so then you have the new head if its one small round and on big round like this

you have the old head
the new shorter block has these mickey mouse ears on the drivers side on the bottom little behind the dip stick

the old will not match up with the new so only new head and block will work or only old block and head will. so if the motor was running at some point it was either all pre84 or all post85
the timeing cover will not work but the water and oil pumps will(i think)
i had to go through this crap when i built my 22re so anything else let me know, also yotatech is very helpfull
