so my buddy blew a head gasket in his 22RE. He has been borrowing my tools and coming to me for help. Yada yada.

He got the head back from the machine shop and he accidentally stripped the threads in the head for the camshaft cap.

Does anyone on here have a fix they know of?

I’ve heard of time serts, but I’ve never used them.
Would anyone have a time sett kit I could borrow to help him out?

Anyone know a shop who could fix it for cheap?

Thanks.

So, there is a locating sleeve that it goes through? Seems that may cause a problem since it would, most likely, not fit after the hole got opened up. You could go up to a 1/2-20. More likely to find that locally, I bet. Yeah Yeah, standard on a yota:driver:

As far as I know, timeserts usually have the smallest tapped hole size, as the external and internal threads are staggered instead of being offset like a helicoil. Depends on whether it's coarse or fine thread because of insert wall thickness.

Don't know about the relative drill/tap size of a Keensert.

Most people have no issues using helicoil to fix. I have a head I am about to do this on.

I have also heard of a longer bolts used in a pinch. Being longer they reach the unused portion of thread at the bottom of the hole.

You can get most sides at advance or napa for the odd ones. M8x1.25 is pretty common.

any idea how much aluminum would be left to drill into deeper and tap out? There wasn’t much left to attach to with a longer bolt.

I'm almost positive its M8x1.25 thread pitch. I am not sure how much material is beyond the end of the factory hole. With Helicoils being short. I was going to measure the factory depth and tape the drill bit so I did not over drill.

Definitely nothing wrong with helicoils. As long as there is room on the diameter it will be fine. It will be a stronger thread than original. Hell, airplanes are held together with rivets and helicoils.

Yep, if you've got the material, helicoil it. We helicoil any hole during part manufacturing (on aluminum parts) that will see repeated insertion-removal cycles. It's extra time and money to install the insert, but you never have to worry about thread wear on an aluminum hole after that.
