When I did my SYE I found that my Chain was loose/worn. I opted to wait and repair it later. Yesterday when I went wheeling in the mud it started popping and it was loud. Sounded like it was jumping teeth. So I am just trying to figure out if it is easier to rebuild it in the Jeep or take it out? What are you guys experience? Also where are you getting the chains and gears for i?. Got to keep it stock so NO 4 to 1 kit for me. I thought about just getting another used one since this one has 230k on it. I appreciate all the advice.

I would just take it out if it was me. Be nice to have it on the work bench. OTOH You can pick up another case for cheap. Might as well just pull that one out and stick another one in.

Lots of places to get parts. Zubz, Alpha, DC etc. If you don't want to stay local I've had good experiances with http://www.jeep4x4center.com/pages/contact.htm

Not that hard to pull the tcase and makes diagnosis simpler and the repairs easier on the bench. If I had my choice I'd take it out. Then check the play and visual wear on the chain. With 230k it may well need one. Also be sure to replace the shift pads on both shift forks when you put it back together! I've seen them pop because of that also.

When I get ready to put in this chain do I have to split the case? I haven't looked in the manual yet. I have to go get it and read some before I start.

Wow!.........

Your opening question was....."When I did my SYE I found that my Chain was loose/worn." Did you do it or did someone else do it? If you did it, it should be obvious. If someone else did it...you might want them to do it again.

At the time I didn't have the money for a new chain. I got the chain and I know the answer now. Gotta open it all up again. Lesson learned again. I didn't realize how loose it was at the time. I knew it was a little bit loose. Now it is obvious. Live and learn and not do the same job twice. Hopefully someone reading this will learn from my mistake before starting their SYE. That way they can have a chain and just make the repair. No big deal so far. If there is damage internally I will spend more money that I could have saved a 6 months ago.

I feel dumb. This was actually really easy. I had my buddy doing most of the work last time. I got it all put back together. Next order of business is the rear end needs fluid changed.

That one is even easier. ;)
