2500 Suburban 2 fuel pumps?

My 01 2500 Suburban with a 6.0 quit running in front of shop. I put some gas in it thinking it might be empty because gauge only works when nearly full. I still only have 18 psi which is only enough for it to start then quit. I went to buy a pump before tearing it apart and find out it has two tanks and two pumps both with sending units. Do I need both pumps and is this part of my gauge issue?

The main pump is inside the front tank and pumps to the motor and is the one you want to replace. It cost around $150-200. The secondary pump is in the rear tank and is used to transfer gas to the front tank. Only costs about $30

The way the fuel gauge works is it takes a reading from both tanks and tries to keep them at a equal level as the front one drains. Both sending units have to be working for it to work correctly.

I ordered the main pump with sender. Should I replace the other one in hopes to have gauge work properly? The gauge hasn’t worked except at full for a long time .

Okay thanks that’s what I’ll do

Scan tool might tell you individual readings not sure, some bmw are that way.

You can check resistance on the sender when you have the unit out to verify linearity and that there are no dead spots.

Could also be the gauge stepper faulty.

I’ll probably have more questions when I get it apart. I would like to fix gauge issue while I have access to senders. Thanks for the advice

99-02 were air core stepper motors and were less likely to fail unlike the 03-07 style which fail frequently. Not saying it's not possible just adding more info to the thread.

When my 2001 1500 had a faulty fuel gauge reading it was the sending unit in the tank that failed.

Main pump was bad. Sending unit on secondary pump was bad. Now have good pressure and gauge works for the first time in years
