Need some advice. Its time to rebuild my wore-out 258 in my 89 yj. Need advice on good place to buy master overhaul kit. And opinions on a cam. i am running 4.88 gears automatic and 35 X 12.5 15 tires. It has howell tbi, stok ing. stock manifold exst. and intake is not a daily driver but i do drive it to go wheeling and a 200 mile drive to go is not out of the question. This well be basically stock eng. mony to tight to do much more then that. Thanks in advance for any help.

I put a crower cam in my jeep, LOVE IT!

As far as buying the rebuild kit, I usually buy my parts from the machine shop that I have do the machine work. Lots of times they can get the parts at wholesale prices and pass the savings on to you.

any suggestions on the grind. i play in the mud on the rocks are up and down hills and when I'm lucky all 3 at the same time

Look into an Hei conversion when doing the rebuild. Its one of the best mods I ever did to mine.
That, and a 4.0 head conversion will make a very rev happy 4.2.

I'm in the same boat as vbaughcome. I've got to rebuild my 258 that let go with the timing chain. My problem is I can't seem to find a good machine shop here in Hickory, NC (Western NC). The one's I used to work with went out of business. Any suggestions from someone in the area.

Thanks,

morgans and sons in drexel. it is easy to find. take I 40 to exit 107 they just moved on hwy 70 just a few miles off of the interstate.

didnt mean to hi jack a thread. but yes, what ever you need. they can also get you the parts you need.

Sweet....I think I am going to get the shortblock rebuilt and then do the 4.0 head conversion....too many people have told me that is the best "trick" that they have ever done to their 258's. One guy told me he had dyno'd his and he had picked up 60+ HP from the head conversion and the headers......

Im building 1 my self, plus a stroker 4.0. they should be able to help you with the 4.0 head mod

Thanks cardudenc....... I talked with the guys at Morgan and Sons this morning. The guy that talked to me was great. He said they would charge $150.00 to disassemble the engine and determine what needed to be done and pricing....that way nobody gets ripped off. He said typically a straight rebuild would be around $1800 to $2000. They also reassemble it almost to "turn key" shape with timing cover and pan installed. That way he said he can test it and check oil pressure and such...

I just finished pulling my engine today and am going to take it to him to rebuild...I would rather spend my money locally with someone like them than trust a out of state rebuild shop

I've got a rebuildable core and head I'd sell ya cheap, it's from an 89, but doesn't have crank or rods. PM me if interested

clifford performance is really on top of 6 cylinder performance. thats pretty much all they do. im fixing to rebuild my 4.2 and i will be buying the master rebuild kit from them cam included.

If you can have someone do the machine work, they are dead simple to put together at home and save yourself about $1k.

i6 motors are among the simplest to doourself.....only thing simpler in my opinion is an ac vw motor.

1800 to 2000 sounds steep,i had mt 4.2 long block done machine work parts and all for 700 bucks.that was in texas so that wont help you out but that just seems a little steep.they must be going to replace everything.

If I would decide just to have the machine work done....which manual is best for reassembly instructions.....Haynes, Chilton, etc...

In my highschool years I did help build a number of 304's and 360's.....I'm just skeptical of my skills with the short block assembly and tolerances.
