258 timing cover - leak between cover and oil pan

Here's the scoop: I have a 258 from an 84 CJ7 that I've fiddled with some and installed into a gremlin. Had the engine on a stand and changed the timing set & gasket, swapped out oil pan & equip, and installed a 1-piece oil pan gasket afterward (and a rear main seal to boot).

After installing the engine and running it, I had a leak from the cover, where the oil pan meets it at basically the very bottom of the 'curve'.... i remembered that originally there were some tabs on the bottom of the cover that appeared to interfere with the 1-piece gasket. From what I gathered they either position the pan or keep it from crusing that particular seal. After searching the internet some I came across a thread where a guy removed those tabs to better fit the 1-piece gasket and all was good. I did the same, and re-installed the timing cover with engine still in the car.... The leak remains. When idling at operating temp it drips about once every 30-45sec.

Is there any trick to sealing this up without pulling the engine (required to swap oil pan gasket)? I've torqued the bolts to the spec in the gremlin book (5-9ftlb for the 1/4" bolts, 10-13ftlb for the 5/16 bolts), and have tried re-torquing them as well with no improvement.
