Pretty sure my truck has the "mystery leak". Everything under the dash has been replaced but after a day, the system loses all charge and blows warm air. Dye tests haven't worked in finding the leak yet. About the only thing left in the system to replace is the condenser and compressor.

Have any of you guys had any luck rebuilding the compressor with new seals ($35) vs. replacing the entire compressor ($150-200)?

I've never tried to build a compressor but if you buy one make sure its a new one not rebuilt! That's all we use at work now.

Your a goober stretch.
Don't waste your money, their rarely the same after a rebuild and suffer from issues like noise to all out failure. Just buy one but do some research first. But!!! Before you do any compressor replacements have someone completely evacuate it, leak test that way and then pressurize with nitrogen. A really neat new kit is available (http://automotivetestsolutions.com/bullseye.html) you could buy it and donate to a worthy cause lol.
In all seriousness I've seen quite a few of those compressors leak.

Don't forget to check the service ports for a bad valve. Sometimes, when a dye test won't work, it's because you are sealing the leak off with your service hoses when doing the leak test.

And I'll second getting a NEW compressor. trying to cheap out on a kit or a rebuilt comp will only have you doing it again in short order.

I'm a goober, what amazing master tech doesn't already have that kit? Jeez. You shade tree mechanic. haha.

I messed with it tonight. I'll probably be replacing the whole compressor anyway. The bearings on the shaft feel all gritty when you loosen the belt and try and turn it by hand.

Your welcome to use the a/c machine but you'll have to make a road trip lol
