Our 2-wheel drive '97 Blazer 4.3L with 165k began leaking oil & I found it coming from the timing cover gasket. I removed the fan, radiator, water pump, etc & then removed the old timing cover which came off pretty easy. I bought a new timing cover with the gasket material made to it & now can't figure out how in the heck to install it without the oil pan gasket trying to fold up. Does the oil pan have to be dropped? According to the Haynes tech manual in order to replace the oil pan gasket the engine has to be removed on the 2wd models but when it talks about replacing the timing cover it says you can loosen the front oil pan nuts? I'm thinking its referring to a 4wd model because the 2wd only has bolts holding the oil pan on or am I missing something. Any ideas on how to remove the timing cover on the 2wd models? Thanks.

You might have to loosen a few more than just the front to get the pan to drop. Its pretty easy to do, whole lot easy than a ford.

I've loosened all the bolts that hold the oil pan to the engine but not the tranmission, I'm guessing that I haven't just broken the seal the oil pan gasket has against the engine even after prying against the tab on the front left of the engine. I'll try again when I get home today, thanks!
