3.0 V6 Toyota ???

1994 Toyota 4Runner with a 3.0. Motor is shot but everything else is clean and works. No rust clean title. $500. What am I getting into to find a used motor and dump in it to drive as a dd/trail rider. Are the 3.0 worth a shit? All I know about Toyota is the 22R/ RE motors... school me up fine folks. Oh, I hope y’alls food hangover isn’t too bad!!

They get a bad rep for popping head gaskets I have had a few only one that popped a head gasket on me was my sister left the cap off the radiator and it ran hot I gave all of the hell and never had a problem other than the one mentioned above but at the same time you could 3rz swap it almost the same power more reliable lighter and better fuel mileage

They are pretty sluggish with an automatic, not too bad with a manual, especially with proper gearing. Sounds like a great deal to me! Car-part.com should have a motor.

If you keep the 3.0 do headers when you swap. The factory exhaust crossover pipe cooks the back of the head on the driver side and causes it to be higher temp than everywhere else. This causes the head gaskets to blow. Installing headers and moving the crossover pipe downstream greatly helps them out

I have a friend that has had his for 20 years or so. He popped a head gasket and heard about the headers and crossover tube thing. He got headers and never has had an issues since. Pretty reliable engine for my friend. That's all I have to say about thay

Found some good motor options on car-part. Talked to the dooder and he just put heads, timing set, water pump on about 500 miles ago. Then the lower end shit the bed so seems like plenty of good parts. Going to pick it up this week. Besides the headers to get rid of the crossover pipe, what can I do to toughen this motor up some? I’m going to buy a JY motor and probably swap over the newer heads and other parts so that means another set of head gaskets. Are the head bolts reusable? Any other little tricks?

I’m pretty sure they are torque to yield bolts and aren’t reusable

Those head bolts are torque to yield. Need new bolts.


One little trick I learned from my prior 3vze ownership... stay away from that motor. More trouble than it's worth.

That’s kind of what I’m gathering but for now it’s going to get put back to “stock” while I figure out a better direction to go with motor and trans (get rid of slushbox).

Whatever the swap I’m going to keep it efi and it will keep the AC! I would like to go manual trans but not a necessity.

3.4 is almost a bolt in IIRC. Just need to make the electrical happy.

Almost bolt in is easy. Electrical Happy is not so much. I hate electrical !!

A friend that I wheel with has a 3.0 with the headers and hasn’t had a problem with the 3.0 after doing gaskets, new bolts, reconditioned heads and headers.


I’ve got a 5spd and case that will Work behind the 3.0 for sale. Pm if interested.
