As some of you know I recently swapped a 97 zj 318/44re combo into my Yj. Its first real outing was earlier this week at tellico. I was supposed to be there all week but due to tranny and t/case problems came back early.
Anyways now that I am back I am thinking of other options for swaping in. The 44re had first gear every once in a blue moon but wanted to start in second most of the time. And the 231 t-case was not up to the task of a V8 and my right foot.
Not wanting to fool with the electonicly controlled tranny crap anymore I am thinking of a mopar 727 tranny swap. Now this leads me to my questions.

-With the jeep 5.2 having the starter on the passenger side instead of the typical mopar drivers side what kind of headache is this going to cause me.
-how hard is it to notch the bellhousing for the CPS and get it in the correct location?
-What options do I have for t-cases that will be drivers drop behind a 727? Ford np 205 possibly?

Mike Ellis once said that you can put 727 parts into those cases i do believe?
Lease thats what i remember.

I think that Justin (99NCxj) is working on the same thing... The 727 is a really good tranny... youll haveta find the transfercase adapter and possibly tailshaft from a Jeep 727 so that itll have the 6 bolt round pattern... and then you can use a Ford 205 or flipped d300, or any other jeep transfercase...

you could probly also use a 46RE from a dodge maybe, but they arent much better.... or maybe a mopar 904 tranny, but the 727 would be the beef of the bunch, just no OD

or if you have the WB, you could get a 727 with np203 combo, then do a doubler, with a ford 205, to save haveing to hunt for the tailshaft combo...

i hope that im wrong, but the jeep BH bolt pattern is different then the mopar... the 727 in mopar is different then both the ones in the IH and AMC at the bellhousin flange and sometimes the tailshaft.... also the SB mopar is diff then the BB mopar pattern

that is the problem he is running in to. I think the starter is also on the wrong side on his GC 318

yeah the starters are on different sides on the GC 318 and the older style... but i dunno if that is a problem or not... the starter bolts to the tranny, and the 727 has a buldge in the case to fit the starter.... on my 318 the back on the block looks the same on both sides, and the only reason i can see for the starter not fitting on the passenger side of it would be that the oil filter mount is in the way, but i dunno about where the filter is on the GC motor

yea, i will be doing the same thing sometime soon in a yj. I'm using a 94 5.2L with a dodge 727. I picked up another toasted 727 for next to nothing so i could use the tail shaft housing to get the jeep xfer case pattern instead of the texas 5 that was on the dodge tranny. I noticed that one of my trannys has the starter location on the right and the other one has it on the left. If i have to, i'll swap the internals over to the other case. I'm planning on using a 242 transfercase. hope my rambling helps.
