35” tire on factory TJ tire carrier

So I was trying to dig a little and see if it were possible, I knew it would be a stretch, and from what I was reading, it’ll last short term but eventually fail. I really don’t wanna fork over the money for an off-road bumper-tire carrier combo, but I did come across this thing. Claims to hold up to a 35” tire. Anyone have experience with these? Or similar items?

I have the Gr8tops version, which is the same as the MORryde one. Several years with a 33 and about 6 years with a 35 on my LJ.

Depends on the tire/wheel combo to some extent. They can damage the tailgate (bend/tear the sheet metal) where the tire carrier attaches and mess up the hinges.

I misunderstood. I thought this product included the plate and hinge reinforcement.

I would not run a 35 on a product that does not include stronger hinges and a reinforcement plate.

I ran a 35" MT on the rear of my jeep for years, then a 36" Irok, then a 38" TSL SX on heavy ass recentered Hummer double beadlock with rubber runflat (the combo weighed about 170lbs), then a 38.5 Creepy, and currently a 37" creepy. There was a period of time (maybe 1-2 years) where I had an aftermarket bumper with tire carrier, but the majority of the 20+ years it was on the stock tailgate, and I'm still using the stock tailgate and the stock mount. It does have a 2" aluminum spacer to accommodate the wider tires. I kept the rubber bumpers to prevent the tire from shaking constantly, and I have welded the top bend in the sheet metal of the stock carrier where it started to crack (like 15-20 years ago). But I see no reason to spend money on anything else.

I could be wrong, but I think the hinge is sold separately.

Also take a look at the one from Rusty's. It's pricey, but replaces the whole thing.

Yeah that’s what I was reading and I’d hate for it to fail while riding down the road and cause an accident. I was also under the impression that part I linked in the first post was a complete setup as far as reinforced hinges and such. I’ll take another look to be sure.

@jeepinmatt thats impressive your factory setup held up to all that, I’d like to think ours would but knowing my luck as soon as I mounted the 35 the whole damn tail gate would just fall off

Is yours sloppy/worn out now? If not, why not just go for it. Nothing to lose since you're going to be replacing parts anyway.

Pic for interest.

Also, it doesn't quite touch the rubber bumpers. But the factory gate is more stable than the bumper/tire carrier I had on there. That thing was always rocking and vibrating, even though it was tight at the hinge and latch.

It’s not wore out yet just seems whenever I work on things with it I always find something that has deteriorated….I do like your thought process though, try it first and if I need to replace or add strength then do it

That's what I've got right now. If you have the stock bumper you need to have the angle tire mount also. There also isn't a stabilizer for the tire. 35x12.50 wiggles a little bit but nothing bad and no noise. I'll try and get some better pictures when I get home.

We are gonna be running some JK rims on it so I’ll have an adapter on the spare tire carrier to accept that bolt pattern, would I still need that angle mount?

The tire hangs down too low and may hit the bumper, especially if you're trying to tuck it in tight so it touches the rubber snubbers on the tailgate. Might could redrill or modify the carrier to raise the tire up. One of ours hits the bumper even though it has a spacer on the carrier and a body lift.

Not sure I thought about making a notch in the stock bumper to make it work. Ideally I'd like to take off the angle and put the stock mount back on with the large hinge.
