I have a good 4 bolt 350 tbi motor and a hook up on a good 700r4 and a dana 300 that i would have to flip. I am getting a 2000 model 4.0 with 45rfe auto. I know the ins and outs of both swaps and, of course, the 4.0 will be a lot less work and cheaper. The jeep is to do mild wheeling and running around in the summer. I have been through the build a huge Jeep bug, and don't plan on going any larger than 35's. What are you guys opinions?

I'll vote 350 mostly for weight savings and also the potential for some very admirable horsepower. Keep in mind the two engine make around the same HP stock for stock. Only when you get to the vortecs do you see #s upwards of 250. Budget 383 stroker builds are done by the thousands and allow you to keep the TBI. 700rs I'm not a fan of but I've seen them work great.
I'd run a v8 over a 4.0 regardless of what it is. But of course I hate 4.0s.

You have a 258 and a 4.0. You have a stroker right there. It will feel better in a jeep than a 350.

Yep, thats why I'm keeping the 6's in the Cruiser and the 53 GMC. The 292 Chevy thats in the Cruiser has crazy balls already, and its well beyond "broken in", Cant wait to feel the torque of the one Im Building, plus you can spend the time/money on building the 6 you would save from the swap cost.

And I think I read somewhere the 350 outnumbers the mullet by 2:1 in trailer parks.

4.0 stroker!

I knew there would be a mixed bag. If I use the 4.0, it will be used as is. Mainly, because using the 4.0 makes for a easier and faster swap. Not that a stroker would not be considered at a later date. I am aware the HP is pretty close for both, but the torque is a lot higher with the 350. Rated anyway. I'm not afraid of a 700 in a small jeep.

FYI a 2000 TJ would have come with a 32RH 3 speed automatic, not a 45RFE. Those came behind the 4.7 V8 in Jeeps of that era. So make sure you account for a lack of overdrive into your equation.
Swapping in the 4.0 will be easier than the 350 swap, but not exponentially so. Either will require some light fab and some wiring. IF, the 4.0 is ready to bolt in and go, that's what I would pick. With 33s, you'll probably want no lower than 4.11 gearing or you'll be screaming down the highway.

No sir. this is from a WJ. I guess it seems it would be a 42RE. And are they worth a damn, since you are commenting now

10-4
They are decent, similar the 32RH but with electronics. Keep them cool and clean and they'll be good to go. Will the additional length of the OD tranny leave you enough room for a rear driveshaft? May wanna grab a tape measure and compare your T5 to the 42.

there won't be much of one. That's for sure.

Why not sell both transmissions and find an AX-15? If you already have a T5 it's a easy swap.

That way you can run either engine with the AX-15 and D300.

im with jody.

my 2 cents. ive always been a sbc swap fan. finally combining that with my jeep fever. If it wasnt for that, i would have gone the 4.0 route in a heart beat.
