I just recently picked up a 1968 J2700 Jeep Gladitor and I am starting to do some work on it. Where is a good place to find engine parts? It runs great but it needs a starter. It is a Buick based V8 350. Where do I find out what is interchangable between other 350's and this one?

Thanks

The starters are interchangeable, most parts are...

Onthe GM STARTERS DO NOT GO ADVANCE or AUTOZONE route, You want a DELCO either from them or GM directly....

TRUST me, unless youlike changing starters every month or so...

I've got a starter I bought from Napa about 2 years ago if you're interested.. Works perfectly, I just am going to a LS1 and can't use it.

Thanks for the info. Let me run this by you guys since I am new to all this auto repair stuff...

The truck was running fine then after sitting for a couple of days it would not start, it would turn and click but was not getting enough power from the battery.

I have a battery pack with jumper cables attached to it that I used to start the truck. That worked fine.

I decided to put a trickle charger on the battery and try to restore it. It would charge for about 20 minutes then give me an error that there was a short in the battery (internal shorted cell battery).

So I went and bought a new battery, installed it and nothing. When I turn the key nothing happens no click, no starting to crank not a thing.

Do you think it is the starter or is there something else I should try?

I would check several things. First being the battery connections. Then the cables. It was turning before, so I am thinking your starter is OK. BTW, that is not a Buick based engine, it IS a Buick engine. The had piss poor alternators on them. Motorola and also had external regulators. Also need to check those to make sure they are good. A regulator can stick causing an AMP draw.

those buick engines are torque monsters for their size. and they weigh a ton less than a chevy 350. other than maybe some of the electronics, nothing is really interchangeable to other gm v8's. However, alot of parts interchange with the 3.8v6 used in the Gran Nationals.

Poston's Enterprizes and TA peformance are the biggest buick engine parts places.

Ditch the ext reg alternator, and swap in a CS series alt from a newer gm car. It'll cost $50 from a yard, take 20 min, and give you the juice you need to run any accesories you want.

Not the starter

I told you I was new to troubleshooting and mechanic stuff...

It starts in neutral but not in park...so its something in the thing (its a technical term) that tells the electronics its in park and ok to start. For now I will start it in Neutral...LOL

I like the suggestions and they will be on the short list of upgrades to this truck.

Thanks again all...

I believe the technical term for that part is the park/neutral switch. You probably just have to adjust it to get it to start in park and neutral.

yeah it would be the park/neutral switch.... some of the vehicles have them on the tranny but a lot are on the shifter... sometimes you can adjust them to get them to work again right.... or better yet, just look to see how exactly it works, and just bypass it.... but remember to never start it in gear

I would also double check the battery cables and connections to see how they look, because they can seriously limit the power going to the starter.... and the older GM style external regulators are very prone to going out and causing serious battery drain, so check and/or replace it

My Dads old 68 Jeep did the same thing, sometimes. Other times it worked fine. Had to pull the shifter towards the park side and it would fire right up. Might try that.
