i have a set of d70 35spl axles and was goin to do a coversion using a d60 spool... i know i have to bore out my spindles but other than that what else is there i need to do..? and will that spool work with my d70 35splines?

yes older dana 70 axles like 98 and earlier have same flange pattern as 60. Spline pressure angle is the same as well. spindles need to be bored minimum 1.560 for oil clearence. and of course the 70 shafts will need to be the correct length.

Can't you bore out the spindles to say...1.5" and let the shaft self clearance? :flipoff2:

well the axles are correct length. Only thing im worried about is if the spindles are goin to have enough material left to be safe... also another question because i havnt tore it down yet... are the spindle on a early model d60 bolt on or weld on..?

welded on, and not all dana 60 spindles can be bored out to accept 70 axles. you need to have enough meat on the spindles to do it. if your not sure, remove one of your 60 shafts and take a pic of the end of the spindle. post it on here

ok... anyone around the asheville area do the boring need to do the swap..?

we rent the tool and of course we can do it in house, but it is difficult even with the tool that we have even changed to make easier. if we were to do it in house we would cut the spindles off and bore them on the lathe then put the boring bar on it and weld them back on straight. way easier.

i would say all 8 bolt hub 60's can be bored most of the ones i have seen that can not are 6 bolt shafts if thats the case your 70 shafts wont work anyway. also the ones that wont bore dont take a regular spindle nut they take a small one like a 44.

just measure the OD of the spindle subtract 1.560 if you have like .060 left you certaintly dont want to bore it.

I had chase do mine and he did an awesome job. You will not regret the peace of mind knowing its done right.

Nobody around will. I looked a few years ago. I talked to nearly every machine shop in town with no luck.
Definately go with Chase at ECGS for the machining.

If ya need any diff setup work...I know a guy.

I would be willing to do it to help you out. Most shops dont want to mess with stuff if its not industrial type work.I have a machine shop in Marion.
