My girls are interested in a 3D printer. I am as well, but mostly want it for them.

I know some of you all have experience with these printers. Tell me what you like/don’t like. Which ones are good and why, etc.

Cost is a notable deciding factor but really would like to make most of the decisions based on performance, functionality, ease of use, etc.

What software is needed? How easy is it to import files, develop your own files, etc?

tell me more.

realistically, I’ve asked the kids to do their own research and pitch to me what one they want and why. But, I also need to be just as informed as them so I can validate their pitch. :D

thanks!

I've been looking into it as well, here's a good time waster:

I have 2 ender 3 pros. Like them, they need to ne adjusted from time to time but great units.

I have bought a few things that were 3D printed. Is it universal that the items are somewhat porous? I had an item break and it is full of tiny air spaces.

You can set what percentage of filler you want on the part. More filler means more filament and longer print times, so if you're buying commercially-printed parts, they have incentives to use as little filler as they can get away with.

Following!

That said, ever since I seen the guy making prosthetics with one, I have been interested. It's a you tube vid where he makes them at a fraction, very small fraction of the cost for folks who otherwise would not be able to afford one. I mean really detailed, as in working fingers and all!
So...
I am wondering about what items you have made, and what you have made with yours. I have seen for sale on market place stuff like drill, and battery holders. Even though I ham happy with my PVC tube tool holders, the 3D printed one just looks cool. I wouldn't mind having the battery holders though. I have also though about a few other items, like a air tool holder. I also have a couple I made from PVC, but they are not exact, and have dropped a few out. I did drill and cut them by hand. I bought some fire extinguisher holders that fastened to the roll cage. $20 or them vs $80 from Fourwheel Parts. have not used them yet, but plan to. I have one of the aluminum ones, so I am thinking of using one of the 3D ones to be a flashlight holder.
Anyway
What are some other things?

Or you can epoxy coat them. I'm running a 3d printed intake elbow for my ls swap.
