Are the frames the same from 96 to 2002? I am buying 4runner without a receive hitch and really need one. I have found a few hitches from several years but dont want to pull the trigger if I cant use it.

yes, they appear to be, I've run into a few places that list 96-97 different from 98-02, but found that THEY were wrong ( I bought a pair of air bags for my '97 from E Trailer, turns out THEIR listing is wrong, the bags were actually for a Discovery, but THEIR engineers refused to admit and I got hosed on the deal. They work, took some massaging, but they've been in there of about 4 years now and still hold air and support the load of the camper.
Trailer hitches should all be the same, be aware, Toyota does not recommend using a weight distribution set up on the 3rd gen Runners ( its in the owners manual )

Installed one on both my 99 and 97. Used the same one from Curt both times bought off E-trailer. That setup is nice because the bolts that go up in the frame are welded to a plate that just slides in the end of the frame. The one I messed with that was bought through the stealer, you had to fish bolts down the framerail and hold them in place with one finger if you were lucky. That sucked.
