4.0 removing pilot bearing, clutch/transmission failure

hey everyone, what is the best/ easiest way to remove the pilot bearing in a 4.0 yj? also has anyone had a input shaft on their ax15 give up and basically blow up the clutch disk?
any help is greatly appreciated.
oh and btw. there is no scoring or hot spots onthe flywheel or pressure plate.:beer:
 
There are 2 common ways to remove the pilot. The easiest is a pilot bearing puller that goes on the end of a slide hammer (autozone will loan these to you for free with a deposit). The old school way is to pack heavy grease into the hole until it is full. You then take a rod that is the same size as the snout on the input shaft and hammer it into the hole. The hydraulic force will cause the grease to push the pilot out of the crank. You may have to repack it several times during the process. Its messy and a pain in the ass but it works and does not require a trip to the store and a tool deposit.
 
new info*** i was wrong. further investigation ofthe transmission/clutch indicates thatthe transmission is stillfine but the loud bang/grinding hadwas from theinternals ofthe disk assembly letting go. so yay me just a new clutch!:bounce2:
 
I had one of the bronze bushings in a 258 stuck so bad one time that I had to actually tap the bushing with threads and use a grade 8 bolt to thread into it and push it out from the back of the crank.

it actually is fairly easy, but can be messy. the trick is having a punch the same size as the pilot.
 
I vote old school way & put a Kevlar pilot back in its place.
 
i have heard of using bread to get the bushing out, but never tired it. The last 2 times i have removed the pilot bushing i used toilet paper and soap water, wet the paper and pack it in the pilot hole with some kind of rod (i used a bolt). once it gets full the pressure will pop it right out. the bolt wasn't even a perfect fit.
 
i ended up grinding a sharp edge on one of my punches and first punching outthe bearings then using the sharp edge to crimp the outside sleeve of the bearing... after that is slid right out. yay hammers!
