Lots of posts on the www on this but wanted to see what the NC 4x4 consensus was. I just replaced the oil in a TJ with 4.0 I just purchased. The oil in it was pretty old and black I used Rotella 10-30 partial synthetic and a mopar filter. Shortly after a tick started. I haven't driven it enough to know if it goes away after running a while but it's noticeable. It seems mainly to be coming from the passenger side. I need to check the manifold for a crack and listen around to see if it's maybe external.
If it was a lifter though what would you guys recommend? Below is a checklist of things I've seen on the web. I know from owning an XJ with 240K on the clock these suckers are noisy but it being a new purchase of course my ears are more sensitive. Power seems good other than what the vampire 42rle sucks out.

In various combinations:
Use Seafoam through TB or crankcase and change oil
Use Seafoam through gas tank
Use rotella 15-40
Drain the oil filter and add equal amount of MMO - run 500 miles, rinse repeat
eff it till it stops running

A 4.0 with a tick? I've heard only a handful that didn't lol. I would check your manifolds for leaks, if its a leak fix it. If its in the motor drive it till it stops. Don't bother worrying yourself to death with it.

My old 4.0 XJ has been knocking for a long time. My friend has it now, has a very good 70k mile motor to put in it but now he's curious to see just how long that thing is gonna knock before it goes. So far me and him both have heavily abused it and it still runs fine and I'm sure it will make it another summer. Just steadily knocking away from the oil pan, just keeps going.

That's how you tell they're running!:D

Mine has been ticking for several years. Ever since a hard run to Myrtle Beach. I thought I hurt it but...?

Ticking prob okay. Knocking...a different story!

BTW...If I remember correctly, there once was a technical service bulletin from Chrysler about piston slap in 4.0 engines. Might be what mine and many others are doing?

Ol jeeps your right. Piston slap was from like 92-99 cause the put nylon cylinder sleeves in. Don't hold me to it, Mike Juarez told me about it but I can't remember exact details. Either way, they can run a real long time like that.

I have seen a couple break piston skirts but that is more of a knock than a tick. If its just a light tick I wouldnt worry about it. Roll on.

Thanks guys. That's kind of what my gut was telling me but when you've just purchased something especially something usually abused like a jeep a new noise can have you guessing. I still may run some MMO for a few hundred just to gradually clean it out. Of posts related to being proactive that seemed to be a more common middle of the road approach.

We throw lifters in when we do head gaskets and it'll eliminate a good bit of the ticks. Some it doesnt, some it does!

Seemingly it was an oil pump drive with maybe a bad bearing. I could put my hand on there and feel it pulsing when the tick was occurring. Replaced it today and at least for now, no tick. Hopefully it stays that way. It's a relief to have my newer 4.0 finally quieter than one 10 years and 100K miles it's senior.
