I had a small coolant leak along the fornt of my 4.0L, originally thought it was the lower hose, but after I looked closer, there was coolant along the top of the water pump seal/block seal area. Since I don't know much about this XJ, I figured a new w/p would be wise, even though cooling seemed fine (rarely hit 210deg.). I put a new AZ Valucrap pump on, new lower hose, RTV between the pump and paper gasket, paper gasket right on the block. After a few days, it seems my leak is back. Everything above the water pump (t'stat hsg, heater pipes, etc) seem dry.
I plan on borrowing a radiator pressure cap tester and seeing if I can find the leak. Any other ideas would be appreciated. I don't see any freeze plugs in this area. Here's a random 4.0L pic I snagged off the net and I drew where it looks like my coolant is coming from. Actually this block looks similar to mine, with the dark "wet" area behind the water pump. Hmmm, is corner of the head the one where the bolt needs coolant sealant? I'd go outside and check it out if the weather wasnt so crappy.
