Long story short - I swapped a 4.0L from a 93 wrangler into my 79 CJ7 about year ago. After the swap I had about 1/8" between the fan and the radiator. Just replaced the tranny mount today and now the fan is hitting the radiator - sounds like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle.

Is there a different fan I can swap in? Or is there a way to shorten the shaft a little? Or is it better of with Contour fans?

Maybe you can change your radiator or radiator mounting to move it forward a little. I know I have seen cjs with two different radiator mounting positions.

@fourwheelingj1 - I've thought about moving it forward and I might be able to get 1/4". Maybe that's all I need.

@Mac5005 - can that be done in a CJ7? Everything I've read about a 4.0L swap into a CJ says you have to ditch the offset fan if you're using a motor from an XJ.

I have a yj with a stroked 4.0. I swapped to xj pump and pulled to gain additional clearance to run a Taurus electric fan.

Fan Would not clear with yj pump.

As far as I know the xj fan is not on the water pump as it is offset to one side and opposite electric fan.

My idea is to find a mechanical fan with the xj water pump bolt pattern ad bolt it directly onto the water pump similar to the typical 4.0 yj configuration.

The yj and xj water pumps have different bolt patterns on the pulley flange but the xj pump snout is shorter and has flat pulley.

The yj pump snout is longer but has offset pulley.

The belt locations are the same.
