4.0L

I don't think it will. I had a 99 to put a motor in and that was the only year that would fit. Can't remember why, but some others will be able to chime in on it.

@77GreenMachine and i just pulley motor out of a 97 grand cherokee and put into 2000 model xj. Just off top my head the accessory brackets, the motor mount brackets, and the flex plate were all different but did swap between blocks. The head is different and manifold ports are not an exact match. He found some kind of adapter plate to allow 2000 manifold to work with older head. Also you will have to make some kind of hold down bracket for coil packs. Project is not complete but is in and is running but we have an injector not firing. We did drive around the block but hope to get injector fixed and really test it out. Im no expert we just learned by trial and error. He did research using that adapter bracket and seemed to find it caused no problems.

00-01 are coil pack motors, the 99 is a distributor. I am fairly certain the 96 ZJ motor will bolt right in.

Just like was said, the long blocks will swap right over. You'll definitely have to swap all of the accessory drive items over, the motor mounts and the flexplate too.
