I know this has been discussed recently, but my situation is a little different. I am planning on running 33's on my cj8 with a 4.0 and t-5 or ax-15 and Dana 300. I am wanting to swap axles for a set with a better gear ratio. I am not going to hardcore wheel the jeep, it is more of a weekend lake, camping, hunting rig that might make it to Uwharrie every once in a while. Our lake place is about 1 hour or so away and all back roads so it won't see interstate speeds very much. I want decent power, but also as good of fuel mileage as realistically possible. I also never plan on going bigger in tire size since it is not really a wheeling rig. I know the 4.10 were offered from factory and I have found a couple of sets, but I also run across axles with 4.56 where people are upgrading axles so I thing I should be able to get either without breaking the bank. Which ratio would be my best bet?

thats a tough call, here's my .02 to consider. It depends on if the 4.0L has enough ass to haul 33s on the highway in OD with 4.10. I would guess yes.
My CJ-7 has a built 258(4.2) with the 4.0L MPI, probably more torque and hp than a 4.0L. No OD transmission and 4.10 axles, that was plenty for 33's on the highway. My problem was that I was running the RPMs too high. My solution was to cut the fenders and go 35s, problem solved. Now when I stepped up from 35 BFGs on aluminum wheels to heavy beadlocked 36 TSLs, I was wishing I had 4.56 for a little pep off the line.

I was running 4.10s in my old yj with the 4.2(258) and ax15 on 31x12.50x15 radials on steelie soft 8s. For what they were that wheel and tire combo was fairly heavy. With the 4.10s that jeep drove great, had some get up an go and could hold od great on the interstate, and i was able to pull a trailer with it. For 33s i would suggest the 4.56s imho

33 go with the 4.56 b/c is is a all around gear for what u r looking for just my .02

i have a 5spd xj with 4.56s and 35s now. it drives almost like it did stock. but when i had 33s i could go 35mph uphill in 5th gear. felt like it was a little too geared for roads, offroad it was great though!
