Picked up a 1987 YJ a couple weeks ago with the intention of putting it together and making a dollar. Instead, the wife has decided she wants to have it for the summer. What are the suggestions for this spaghetti mess of wiring? Should I gut it and start over, order a new harness or just patch it back together again? As long as it is reliable for around town driving is all she wants.

I don't remember my 90' YJ (renix) having that damn many wires, let alone a 4.2.... I say go wire by wire and just run what you need.

This is the left over CJ days, first year for Chrysler. I think it has a Weber carb and electric choke, coolant running through the intake, etc.

Can I just remove the lines that go through the intake completely? I would think I could just run an after market ignition system, lighting power and some gauges and beer done. No need for any computers on this gem!

factory carb or motorcraft? I would eliminate the wires that have anything to do with the factory carb/ecm. Just keep the lights, ign, sending unit wires.
No sending unit, mechanical pump on the side of the block!

My old roommate had an 87YJ, did exactly what you propose, except he replaced the intake with an Offy 4bbl and was dumping way to much fuel in it. Then he split, I never heard if he got it running right. Had some Mallory and MSD distributor/coil/ignition module.
On an unrelated note, keep in mind the 87-88 YJs were cursed with the Peugeot 5-speed if it's a manual, and a 21spline NP207.

That's the one. It's going to be a mall crawler.

That's a Weber (or a knock off Weber, be warned). You can cut A LOT of that wiring out since the PO got rid of the computer controlled carburetor.
With the computer disconnected (Nutter Bypass, or Nuttered), you should only need wiring for the ignition system. You can clean it up further if you swap to an HEI distributor..

Going to go read about Nutter bypass now. I've heard of it but never checked it out because I had no reason.
