So, I am to the point where I need to order belts for the TJ. Well actually I should have done this a few weeks ago, but I'm having a hard time deciding.

The Jeep sees a good amount of street use so that means two things: the potential for crashes at speed is present, and having to dick around with a 5th belt sound not fun.

I am aware of the shortcomings of 4 point belts on the street, so I originally thought I would retain the OEM belts but the inertia reels are shot, so they don't really protect you from anything except a ticket. Looking at the cost of new IR and 5 point belts, I can get Schroth 4 point ASM belts which seem like a good option. Does anyone have experience with these? Or any other recommendations for street use harnesses would be great.

Do you already have a cage or something with a proper harness bar? Installation is critical with any type of multi point harness.

For cruising the mall, I wouldn't want to be harnessed firmly in my seat. Even adjusting the HVAC or changing the radio station can be a major pain if it's just out of reach. Glove box or drop something on the floor...forget about it.
I would look into new inertia reels, stock replacements etc.

Cage is nearing completion, which is why I need to make a decision.

It's a TJ, I could reach everything belted into the back seats.

I'll be watching this one and taking notes. I've always done traditional 5 points in my rigs for the street.
Looking for something better this time if it's out there. I've already got a fancy ball gag and chain rig to go on the passenger side. I get tired of saying STFU every 5 minutes.

I mounted the reel on the floor where the original reel was. Ran the the strap up and through the backs of the seat.

Works for what i need and access to the backseat (if i had one) is simply done by unlatching the buckle.

You must have Michael Phelps arms. I have long arms, but I can't reach the dash center without leaning forward a little.

I had a samurai previously, and even it that tiny thing reaching the dash was difficult if securely harnessed.

I ordered up a set of the Corbeau that Langford has and tried to install them yesterday... The damn things won't adjust short enough to mount to the cage. Still thinking on whether to return them or get them sewn shorter.

If you ever think you might roll get a 5 point. The crotch belt is very important to keep you from hitting your head. When trail riding I use lap and crotch belt. I only put on the shoulder belts when I do something crazy.

The reason why I went with the belts above was that I could run them in the same tabs as a standard 5 point should I want to swap out for a ride.

You need to be very careful with this kind of attachment. If you have a hard front collision at speed, the straps will pull you downward and compress your spine.
Harness rear attachments should always be just a little little lower than the seat so the straps are angled just a little downward.
This may sound overcautious but I've personally seen it happen w/ a guy carried off w/ compressed vertebrae.

I had one of those 3-pointers on my 4runner when I started racing. Used the belt hook on the rear cage as the attachment. Worked ok but it was hard to get the angle right + the same thing about not being able to shorten them enough.

Also, lack of the crotch belt was a constant problem. Over time they ride up higher on you. There's a reason the 5th strap is called an anti-submarine belt.
Personally I think you really need to just get a 5 pointer and replace the OEM belts.
