I am rebuilding a 73 CJ-5 and was just curious if you guys think 4'' is going to make the handling on the road/highway terrible on this jeep. I got a hell of a deal on some 33's which is why I propably need a 4'' instead of 2 1/2. Any advice you guys could give me is greatly appreciated.

my CJ5 had a 4" suspension, 1" shackle, and 3" BL and 35"s on it. drove fine to me. probably wouldn't want to run a high speed slalom course with it, but sufficient for a driver with common sense.

I putting a 4" lift on my 78 cj5 also I found that the drive shafts need to be longer & the exhaust needs to be rerouted mine is a 304 & I am putting it on full size axles

actualy the 2.5 will probably work best. i had 33s on with no lift. rubbed the front fenders good. Added 2.5 and it worked out nice :) But unfortuantely the springs were a bit stiff :(

due to the different driveshaft angle the factory tube that comes off the pass. side to the small single crappy main was holding the drive shaft 2" above the pinion of the axle

my $0.02

I have a '67 with 2.5" springs, with 1/2" body lift (for cleaning!) and 1/2"-3/4" more lift in the shackles with 33"x12.50-15. Stock exhaust and stock D-Shafts. All works fine!

...but I turn over a lot!

79 cj-5 6 inches of lift running 33 x 15.50's no scrubing stock shaft in the front works fine stock shaft in the rear is scattered down the highway. to steep of angle to the pinion recomend reaiming the pinion and double ujoint shaft

You might want to stick with a 2-1/2" lift on an early (pre-'76) CJ. The springs are short and narrow on the early CJ's. The short springs require a lot of arch to gain 4" lift. They seem to be prone to bending in front of the rear mount and more arch will increase this tendancy. A military wrap spring will help some. Lots of arch will also hurst your ride quality and flex. Also, you will get more body roll in the early CJ's due to the narrow spacing of the rear springs. More lift = more roll.
You should have plenty of room for 33's with 2-1/2".

Jeff, you need a set of fenderwell headers. Just so happens I have a set w/mufflers.
