went wheeling the other day, 4 wheel drive worked at first, then stopped engaging at end. went again today and it did not engage at all in 4 hi or low. wondering if yall had any idea what might be wrong.

what kind of veh.? more details would help

could be several things but i'd check the vac lines/actuator first. i've got some of those here if you need a new one

if its on a vac, disconnect model, definitely check the vacuum diaphram and lines......when i still had one, it would work when cold, but when it warmed up, the seals would leak, and it would not lock in the front

just pull out all the vacuum lines, cap the source, and put a screw through the actuator to lock it in the engaged position, the whole system is good for nothing but causing problems.

Just in case

If you haven't heard about it yet, (I found out the hard way, after driving into the mud hole) And providing you do have the vacuum front axle disconnect. There is A great product called, posi-lock. Google it. This is A very strong cable setup, easy to install. I have had one in my jeep, for about two years now, & it works every time. You may have to drive forward, slowly while turning right & left but, It does engage/disengage in A positive manner. The only way I'm giving mine up, is if I decide to put A Dana 60 up front!:wheel:

Posi-Lock's are great but be wary those too can wear out and not work right. mine is a pita! (it has been well abused though) but works better than that vac crap ever did!

posi-locks are indeed better than the vacuum, but the fact of the matter is, unless you're running a welded diff, and looking for a cheap selectable, there's really no good reason to want it to ever disconnect (as jeep themselves apparently decided in later models) and you're better off just locking the actuator permanently in the engages position with a screw/bolt/whatever and never have to worry about it again (until you snap the fork)

rushdunaway,,
what was the problem ,it's been 3 days ????

hey sorry i figured it out, yall were dead on. i forgot i posted this. i got a guy to look at it for me, and he made me look like a dumbass. i told him the 4wd wasn't engaging, he looked at my front axle, and said "Theres your problem, the hose for the actuator is disconnected." i connected it and put zip ties on it to try and keep it in place, but now the whole thing turns and it comes undone. does anybody know of anything to make sure the damn thing stays in place and connected?
