I'm running a stock 454 with a set of 42x14.5 and a set of 44x18.5 tires. Geared 5.38. What do y'all think would be the best transmission? Its 90% trail rig but it does have tags, so I drive it from time to time on the road.. Thanks!

a th350 can be built to put up w/ alot of abuse, but costs.

th400 are very stout in stock form, and can be built to put up w/ just about anything (vast majority of trophy trucks run 400's)

th400 does have one big weakness. there is a position where they will suck air, and will QUICKLY burn themselves up. Its happened several times at rock crawling comps.
For what it sounds like your truck is, its prolly unlikely that this should concern you, and I'd just go straight to the 400.

I am going with the T350, biggest reason is size. I do not want to run a two piece drive shaft, and with the 400 I think I would, so consider clearance in this decision

The TH350 can be built to be just as strong as a built TH400.

I don't really have the money to build the tranny. The only reason I'm thinking about going to the TH400 is B/C a friend of mine broke down in URE. I pulled him out of the trail and it was really hard on the TH350. We had to stop some and let it cool down... I don't have a cooler on the tranny. Do y'all think I should go with a cooler first and see how it goes from there??? Thx again!!!!

YES a tranny cooler is a must! It doesnt matter if you had an Allison or a th200, if you heat up the fluid too much you will burn it up and it will be toast! Plus they are not too expensive!

That truck should still have a tranny cooler. Its a small one right above behind the rad. that 350 was built strong as HELL!! maybe a lil tired now but lugged 49'' irocks around for most of its life.. I sure miss that ole truck.. Also if you want another tranny built like that one let me know.
