wont start, but when cranking has a good blue spark that'll jump about 1" from screwdrive to block. Pulled air filter, smells like fuel. When it died, we were @ uwharrie. It would run, but very sluggish and smoked black while misfiring heavily. Pulled intake off carb (carb is brand new) and cranked over and fuel is spraying the wrong way out of the carb. i figured it was very rich, so i turned the fuel feed on the tank OFF. After cranking for a while to clear the flood, it would start up, and then die......

stuck float??

Stuck float should cause constant fuel flowing out the overflow of the carb. Wouldn't hurt to tear the carb down completely and clean all the parts real good, but that might not be the problem.

When it restarted with the fuel off, did it run like normal and sound OK until the fuel ran out?

I actually had a rancher come in guy said he was riding it when it died and wouldn't crank up but would hit and sputter a little. It had good spark and I pulled carb down and checked everything because the air filter was soaked with fuel. Only when I put the carb on and tried spraying brake cleaner in the intake did I notice it was blowing air out of the carb, and when I checked it was sucking air into the muffler. I pulled the front of the motor down to the timing chain and it was so loose it had jumped a complete 180 degrees. So a new timing chain and set the timing he was ready to go. Not sure if its your problem but if its blowing air out of the carb it might be a possibility

figured it out few weeks ago...pulled the carb off, somehting was rattling inside it. somehow it bent the hell out of the needle. wasnt shutting off the fuel...like ever lol. replaced the needle and all is well.
