I currently run 38x15.50 Mickey Thompson MTZs on 20x10 Gear Alloy Model 715 wheels. I am looking to buy 40x15.50 Toyo M/Ts and mount them on the same wheels. The 38s seemed to wear fine and even for the most part despite being on a 10 inch wide wheel.

My question is do most of you think I will be fine (looking over the life of the tires) running a 15.50 wide tire on a 10" wheel? If I had the extra money I would buy another set of wheels (20x12 or 22x12), but I'm not looking to spend quite that much. The tires are ungodly $$$ as it is.

I think it will be alright going from a 38 to a 40 will give you a little more sidewall and won't "ballon" as much as the 38's.

^This. You will actually be better off with the 40s than the 38s with the same width due to the taller sidewall allowing the tread to not crown as much. I too have 38x15.50s on 20x10s and haven't had any significant irregular wear so far.
