47RH rebuild questions

I bought a '94 2500 RCLB CTD with the 47RH. The trans is slipping bad as we speak, but I knew that when I bought the truck and got a great deal on the truck. Once the trans warms up even slightly, it slips bad.

My eventual HP goal would be somewhere between 500-600 rwhp. What all besides a good TC and valve body should I include on the parts list for the rebuild of the 47RH? Billet input/output shafts, etc? Also, would it be easier/cheaper to just buy a trans from say someone like Goerend? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'd just call Goerend and ask Dave what you want to do with the truck and what he would suggest.

That's what I did for my 47rh build. I've been very pleased with their products and customer service.

I'm not making that kind of horsepower, just towing so I did the lifetime warranty triple disc billet converter, valve body, and billet apply lever.

It's 4wd. Might see some occasional sled pulling/drag racing throughout the year. Not much, but maybe 3-6 times a year.

Garmon's diesel + DPC converters in Ga. gets my pick

their pricing:

Don't forget Power by Poole in salisbury, too. Goerend is also recommended (i'm running a 15-blade left cut converter in my 12V)

As far as the minimum for parts:
- upgraded rebuild package (including what getstucksome mentioned)
- Triple disc converter
- billet input

If you think you might end up abusing the truck with boosted launches & TC locked shifts, you might want to just step up and get the 'full billet' type of build - which would be in the $6500-7k range.

P.S. - I'm full of suggestions for 12V's, btw.

Thanks Hurley. They'll be some boosted launches here and there, but I dont know if I can swallow the 6-7K pill for a tranny build. Ouch. I realize you gotta pay to play but damn. How much power can a stock 6 speed Allison 1000 series that come behind the Duramax hold? Maybe I should just get the conversion kit from Destroked. ?

not worth it. stock allison is still in the 500-550 range capable, from what I've read. then you have to have the controller. I'd rather just pay for the beefed 47RH. It's hard to get around the necessity of big parts with a 4x4 truck with the weight & drivetrain stress, but that's part of the game.

IMHO, it's easier to overbuild on the front end than to build partially once and then replace more stock items later after a failure of some sorts.

Here's an option: My buddy that works at Advance Auto can get an entire built 47rh tranny with triple disk converter for about $1900..it should hold that much power. I considered it when my stock tranny died in Aug but went with a cheap stock rebuild. Contact him...he's Crowdpleazer on here.

Not a chance. Even without boosted launches.

If you're looking to play in that level then 6-8k is what you're looking at for an entire trans/tc.

A knowledgable Cummins enthusiast said I could get by with the following and have a 47RH that will hold up:

$300 reman billet converter
$625 billet input shaft
$110 Transgo shift kit TFOD-Diesel
$200 rebuild kit - ebay
$350 billet servo, lever, accumulators, etc.
$150 thicker flex plate

What yall think about that list? That's roughly $1800 in parts and I may attempt to build it myself to save money.

Ive never even seen a used billet converter that cheap. are you sure about that?

The mods listed above would get you a nice stout trans for driving and towing at moderate power levels. Not for boosted launches, racing and sled pulling.

It just depends on what you want to do with it.

What parts did you end up going with ?

Hows the trans holding up?
The new drivetrain in the RV may have me running a 47rh and it will get a rebuild and some parts trying to figure out what all i 'really' need..
Engine be putting out 250hp, 15k total load incl. trailer/jeep...

Thoughts? Opinions?
