Went to take a friend to the airport during the whole snow thing and so I decided to take the 4runner. Ran just fine all the way there but on the way back it started doing something odd. all electrical stuff started fading... The headlights went really dim to the point where i couldn't see very far, wipers were in slow motion, radio turned off, all the interior lights faded, etc. Then the charge light and emergency brake lights went off as well. It was like the battery was dieing but the car was still running. when I got back onto smaller roads off I40 it started sputtering... I through it into neutral and started revving the engine, all the lights surged back to normal for about a second then went to back to fading.... Had to come the whole way home switching it out of gear and revving it to keep it alive.

Is it a really dead battery?? an alternator? a short somewhere?

started ok this morning but only got a few blocks before it started doing the same thing.

Thanks for the Help

thanks for the info... Priced a few today

Is it worth the $180 from the dealer
or is the $100 one from nappa (with a lifetime warranty) a happy medium?

I would go with the lifetime warranty if you plan on keeping it. But b 4 you drop the dough, did you check it or have it checked? I know autozone and advance do it for free, maybe napa too. and you ain't obligated to buy something if it is bad, so don't fall for that if they dont have the one you want.

what year is the runner? I ask cause my old ranger had a similar problem, and later found out it was an engine computer going fuzzy. but it was a ford lol. :)

I checked it myself (o volts from alt haha, btw I did check fuses as well) and thought that was funny so I took it to advanced. the guys there tested it and said my battery (from '02 haha) was pretty fried and the alt was dead. Think my alt started going back in the snow and my battery has just been carrying me through. now both are very dead. I don't mind dropping money in the alt bc the last thing I want is a stupid alternator problem on the trail or a road trip.
