4runner to Tundra disc swap

Adam (wheeln62cj) and myself just got done with a Tundra brake swap on my 2000 4runner. Using the 199mm (from a 2001 4wd V8 Tundra) calipers/pads/rotors, everything was a straight-forward swap that required no modification, other than bolting the Tundra parts up. The 4runner stops significantly better, and I would recommend it to other 3rd gen 4runner owners that have issues with rotor warping and inadequate brakes.

Do you have to go up in wheel size? Wish I had seen this earlier, I went down in size (to base model 4 cyl brakes) to try to avoid this very problem. On the plus side, I've yet to warp these rotors.

Looking at doing this to my wife's 99'. It keeps warping the rotors. I had thought of putting discs on the rear since I will have the calipers (off the front), but don't really want to not have a parking brake, and I don't really want to rig up a tcase brake, but I think I could make one work with the factory park brake lever.

My main worry with switching to rear discs is the ABS stuff.

I have a '02 3rd Gen 4wd and was recently quoted $600 for parts and labor to replace my warped front rotors at the dealer.

If you don't mind, what was the cost of the parts to swap over?

Thanks

You have to run 16" wheels with this swap, but most 4runners have 16" wheels anyways. Rotors are ~$110, Pads are ~$50, Calipers are ~$160 (pair). $320 will get you new Tundra brakes. Be SURE to get the 199mm calipers and the corresponding pads, as the 231mm calipers with interfere with the wheels. The 199mm calipers/ pads/ rotors are a complete bolt on. Easy swap.

Beats me. I know this mod works on the '96-'02 4runners and the 96'-'04 Tacomas, but unsure about later generations.

S13WE is the caliper casting.

So I did some parts crossing and it looks like the 96-04 tacoma rotors are .87 thickness and the tundra rotors are 1.1 thickness. My 06 tacoma already has the 1.1 thick rotors. Doesn't look like this swap would benefit the newer tacomas.

Is the add thickness of the rotor the reason for the swap? Or is there some other benefit?

That is the primary difference. The factory rotors just don't cut it. I don't think I have ever seen or driven a 3rd gen v6 4Runner that doesn't have or hasn't had warped rotors at some point. IMHO replacing them with what comes on the vehicle is just pissing money away. The cost of all the Tundra gear is just about the same as what you will spend on 4Runner stuff.

I just did the swap last weekend on my wife's 4runner. WELL worth the money. Factory brakelines fit, no need to change those if you don't want to. I bought reman calipers and new rotors from NAPA, paid $500 with ~$180 worth of core charges, so it's really not that expensive of a swap.
