Problem -1998 Ford Ranger 4x4 4.0-V6, 5 Speed. 4wd High & 4WD Low lights flash about every two minutes. It does this with the key turned to ON or if the truck is running.

It did this on Tuesday this week. I put the truck on the lift and changed the ATF in the T-case. The old ATF had less than 30K miles on it. I put in the recomended Mercon ATF and the truck was fine Wed-Fri. On the way home from work tonight the lights started flashing again. Now the truck will not shift into 4WD High or 4WD Low. It had no problem doing this on Wed or Fri morning.

Anyone have an idea or can point me to info on the cause/solution?

Answer: The flashing lights indicate a fault code is stored in the drive train control module. Retrieving the code will pinpoint the malfunctioning component.

Go to Autozone or AA to pull the codes for $0

Funny thing is I drove the truck today and used 4-Hi & 4-Lo going up and down my driveway and it worked fine. The driveway is 1/4 mile long and I drove it about an hour on the highway in 2wd with no flashing lights.

I checked for codes with my OBD-II reader and nothing showed up. Would the codes from the drive train control module show up on an OBD-II reader?
