4wd rant

Went down to Kure Beach about two weeks ago and drove the old CJ (maybe a slight mistake considering the heat index never got below 105 all week and it has no doors, no ac, and only a bikini; that and had to hear the wife bitch all week about how hot she was...the bitching was the worst part) I enjoyed the sun, the surf, and a few cold ones. But I have started to notice recently and I guess it was just made very apparent down there where there are a lot of Jeeps around, that NOBODY waves anymore. I know we have all heard "it’s a Jeep thing" but to me it’s not even that; it’s the comradery between all people in the 4wd world. You can look at a Jeep or any other off road vehicle and can appreciate the time, effort, and money that someone has put into their vehicle to prepare it for the off road world. Weather someone did all the work themselves or paid someone to do it, it still took the forethought to imagine and put together a good looking and good working vehicle. While I was down there, I personally stopped and at least attempted to help four other off road vehicles (two Jeeps, a Toyota, and a Ram), even against my wife's protests. I even saw one vehicle down on the beach, after everyone else left, and drove another mile down the beach to just check on him because I knew it was only an hour or so before the beach access closed. Only to find an F-350 sitting on 40's who had blown an engine. And against everyone with me's protest me and my 85 CJ7, sitting on 33's, with the original 258 and over 200,000 miles, we attempted to pull him off the beach. Granted I just didn't have the traction to do it, but hell I got him a quarter mile closer to the access before we hit the loose sand and all I could do was dig...but the point is that I tried; not because I had to but because it was my duty as a fellow off road enthusiast. I can count on one hand how many people waved back at me as I threw my hand up basically to say "hey I like your ride and understand your plight". We as off roaders understand that there are certain things that we sometimes give up to have our fun and functional rides. (such as ac and sometime the smoothest rides) I have noticed that JK owners seem to be the worst for this. Maybe it's because every Tom, Dick, and soccer mom has one now. I guess long gone are the days of the Jeep being a legendary off road vehicle. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate what a longer wheel base and the option of 4 doors can do for a family who might like to wheel together but it is all these people who are just trying to relive their youth who buys these JKs with hard tops, hard doors, ac, satellite navigation (which is only used to get to the nearest Cosco or McDonalds) and don't have a clue how to remove the doors or top, must less know how to engage the 4wd. And don't even get me started on how society is changing and how the youth of today act as though they have this sense of entitlement.
I guess the whole point I am trying to make here is Jeep owners...WAVE AT OTHER JEEP OWNERS, and everyone else; if someone waves at you...WAVE BACK!
Feel free to add your two cents worth!

probably has to do more with location than the vehicle

i.e. more folk wave driving down a country road than in the city

I've said for a while now that with the 4x4 genre, the targeted demographic is no longer the enthusiast that will fully utilize all functions of a 4x4, but rather the 'status symbol' demographic is the new target. Which to me, introduces exactly the people you're referring to. If nothing else makes it more evident, it's the rolling living rooms with transfer cases being produced today. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind some of the finer amenities...but I believe the majority of buyers today are simply purchasing to keep up with the Jones' or for the biggest baddest thing they can afford or what daddy is willing to pay for. Which then translates to a large majority of folks that 'offroad' because they have a 4x4 and offroading is cool. Then compound that with the complexity of some of the simpler tasks of yesteryear, like brake pad changes...I read somewhere that there are a few rigs out there now that when it comes time to changing pads, the caliper pistons will lock down and won't release unless you have the proper programs. So 1 part buying for the sake of buying, 1 part not having to/can't work on your rig and 1 part entitlement...and you have a breeding ground for a new wheeler hybrid. Enthusiasts are a dying breed.

I know what you mean. I can pick out the wheelers from the shitters and ppl who just buy vehicles and never actually use them.
I'm 27 grew up out country, my grandpa on dad's side doesn't understand the whole wheeling and pride thing of owning a 4x4 and using it.
"Go tear your truck up going out there you bought it to drive on the road" Some times I think we and only a select few, are the only ones left. Who like getting out doors and going places away from society. I'm sure you guys understand what I'm trying to say.

Only to find an F-350 sitting on 40's who had blown an engine.

Was it a 6.0L? lol

I have noticed a while back the decline in the 4x4 wave. About 7 years ago my dd was a Commando on 35s with a 350 blah blah blah. Rolling down the road I would wave a Jeeps or even other lifted rigs, rarely did I get a return wave. So I rolled my rig and now I don't have to wave at Richy Rich in his blinged out Rubicon.

I do notice a fair amount of friendly OBS Powerstroke waving going on.

The 'wave' is half the fun. I think its pretty cool myself. I don't get out much with the jeep so if I don't wave, it's because I forgot what the hell I was driving!

it's the same with Harley riders too.My mother's husband who is a life long rider and in his 70s talked to me about it. Buying a bike, leather vest, chaps, and a leather hat doesn't make you a bad ass biker.

I get waves all the time. Of course even though they are common on the trail, if you see a lifted Samurai on 32s or bigger it ain't gonna be a mall crawler.
Just ain't too many of on the road to begin with.
I get the waves from wheelers of all kinds. Oddly enough, when topless, and doorless, I get it from bikers (HD, etc)
Besides ... 75% of the any Jeep sold today might as well be 2wd ... most soccer fields have nice parking lots.

The wave isn't just for the 4wd community, drive through a small town and everybody waves.

True...but that's more of a hospitable, courteous waive...it doesn't carry the same intentions as an enthusiast waive. Which btw, I'm absolutely blown away every time I head back the midwest way at the complete and utter lack of hospitality. I've been south of the Line for about 18 years now...and I just can't get over how true 'southern hospitality' actually is.

Enthusiast wave or not IMO its that so many people this day and age have there head so far up there ass and only care what goes around inside the confines of their vehicle, if they can even see past there hands on the steering wheel. Its a sad age we live in anymore...

I use to get waves all the time in my Daihatsu Rocky with the doors and top off, from bikers and jeeps mainly

Don't be dis'n the JK owners Bra! We don't wave at CJ owners for the same reason Marines don't wave at Navy Sqiddlies. You Just don't rate in your substandard little short and narrow unlocked POS Jeep. We are just plain and simply too dang badass to be bothered.

:flipoff2:

Just kidding wit ya. I notice a lot of 4x4's in general will bypass other 4x4's at the beach when they are stuck in the sand. I usually spend at least 3 hours a day pulling people out when we go to Carolina Beach. Hell, I enjoy it. Gives me a little break when the fish are not biting. I do know what you mean about JK owners not waving. They always give me a funny look when I wave at them too. I think it has more to do with texting and talking while driving more than anything. Just the other day I drove by a fellow jeep owner that I hang out with and am very good friends with, we were both in our grocery gettin JK's, and I never even saw him because I was texting. Of course he called me on the phone and let me know what a douche I had been. So anyway here's a little sumpin from a 4 door JK owner.

i live in wilmington and it's the worst for stuck up snobby soccer moms driving JK's..... and stuck up yuppies in the same..... case in point..... ridin my TJ on 33's this AM, i dropped the daughter off at daycare, in the middle turn lane and traffic was crawling see a JK rolling up with 35's, aftermarket bumper, flares, winch, etc..... pristine condition...... i wave as he passes at 10 MPH. looks me directly in the eye like he wants to shoot me and continues on.... prick.

so don't take it personally down here man. it's just how a bunch of the 4wd drivers are down here.

I catch myself giving the wave to jeeps and other obvious 4x4 rigs, even when I'm in the work van!
There is someone in a green TJ or YJ that I wave to on Hwy 150 almost every afternoon. When I'm in my WJ he notices and waves back, when I drive my chevy he has no idea who I am and probably doesn't notice, but I'm still waving.

This is true! When I've got the doors and top off the samurai I get waves from most every jeep, motorcycle and lifted truck around here. Mabye they respect the Samurai??

I get waves all the time, and I always return. I also get people hanging at the back beside my trailer, taking long looks at my Jeep. Several times, such a long look, they almost run into the side of my trailer, and a few times while I was driving my hauler with it on the back. Yep, even when it was the old broken down original upnover Jeep. That is usually followed by a horn honking, and a big thumbs up when they finally pass me.
And, it's not just a Jeep thing, I wave at any trail rig looking rigs too.
