Anybody know if a 4wd auto trans out of a cherokee will work in a 2wd MJ. I know the outputs are not the same, But i havent dealt with them enough to know if you can change the tailshafts and make it work.

My Nephew has a 2wd MJ and his trans is shot. If there is a way to make it work, I was going to try and save him some money and give him a 4wd trans from a cherokee about the same year.

it should work just have to use the 4x4 rear drive shaft
and transfer case

I've read about people going the other way, converting 2wd's into 4x4. They usually say its a PITA to swap the tailshaft sections, sounds like its a complete tranny teardown to do that, a lot easier to find a 4x4 tranny.

Yeah, I know I would need the transfer case also to turn it to 4wd. He is just really broke. Was hoping that it would be like the old GM tranny's and you could just swap the output shafts. guess I'll just have to find a 2wd trans.

The entire trans, tcase, and driveshaft will have to be swapped. Hell you might aswell swap a front axle into it and make it a 4wd while your at it lol. Been there done that.

I'll see what he's up for doing. If it had been me, I wouldnt have bought a 2wd jeep to start with. But like i said, He is really broke, and i was trying to find a way to save him some money. thanks for the info.
