4x4 setup for NC terrain

Good day.
I have a '93 Jeep Cherokee and want to spend my money wisely, not waste money on building an "over-achiever".
This will not be a daily driver, but I would like it to be street legal to drive to the trails and on the streets if I need to.
For, what we will call, "Phase I", I would like to retain the stock axels but locking and re-gearing are do-able (Chry 8.25 in the rear), but I would like to build the Jeep for NC terrain. As I see it, that includes sand, thick freakin' mud, and some mild rock (is this a correct assumption for NC?).
That being said, what lift height and tire size would be optimal for the majority of NC trerrain (I would think there is no need for 8" and 37" tires for NC)?.
I already understand the importance of armor and recovery, so that, we'll say is a given.
Reader's Digest: The question every newbie asks (lift/tire) but area specific with regards to NC terrain.

well back to where we started....if i was in your shoes heres where i would go.

29 spline 8.25 D30 regeared to 4.88
lockrite f/r
trimed fenders with a RE 3.5 kit
some nice 31-33inch tsl's
front bumper with winch.....

theres your fun mobile.........

Reclaiming my thread

Time to reclaim my thread from the evil Andrew haha

Is there a reason you suggested 4.88 gears? 4.56 seem to be the popular vote for 33" tires.

why waste the time and go 4.56 when 4.88's will be the same loot about more low for ya. I know some who are happy with 4.56 but i know a lot who wish they went lower. You will be much happier with the 4.88s and a 33. :driver:

nope youll be happy on the road as long as ur not trying to run 75 down the interstate.

i love my 4.88s and know others on 33's who were and are. just my opinion

Ouch ! and here I was looking at 4:10s with 33s on a 02 TJ with a 3.5 long arm.
I guess you never know except to ask those who go there and do it.

as far as gearing is concerned it depends on your engine

I own a 84 toy with a buick v6 in it and 4:56 gears with 35 in tires and love it geared the way it is. but my engine is real tourquey and has lots of horse power. I had 4:88's for a while and hated it on the highway but in the trails it worked good.

when I still had the four cylinder engine and the 4:88's it was great on the road and the trails. with 33's

but once I put the bigger engine in, it was way too much gear for my liking.

so gearing is usually about what your used too and how you drive as well.

but 3-5 inches of lift
33 or 35 inch tires
proper gearing
some fender trimming
a winch bumper with winch or a tow bumper in front with trailer hitch hook up and one of the removable winch mounts that hooks into your tow hitch locations.

Where did you get 4.88's for a 8.25? Lowest I've found is 4.56.

If anyone is making 4.88's for the 8.25 please let me know where you found them...I think its absolutely stupid that you can buy 4.88's for all the other axles but not the 8.25. he must be running a D44 in the rear.
