4xPhoto's

Chris,

I think that is a great idea. But I also think you should consider buying a vendor subscription here seeing as how you are advertising your business and supporting those who support you is never a bad idea. Until then I think your thread should be deleted or locked.

I am not really advertising a business as of yet but I understand what you are saying. I more or less just wanted to out line the idea and see what people thought before I spend alot of time on it.

Sorry if I overstepped......

chris,

to me, it sounds like you are wanting to take pictures of peoples rigs to use in your portfolio, which can only be of personal benefit to you (financially or as an artist).

so then you want people to pay you for something that is already benefiting you, regardless of their payment.

this is not a flame, just a clarification.

i feel like if you use images of someones property to your benefit, should they pay you, or should you pay them...or am i misunderstanding your intent?

you can take flicks of my ride all day, but if you don't pay me, or provide me with prints and license to use the images freely, i would feel like i'd been used.

btw, i checked out your websites. not bad. but honestly, you have yet to "wow" me. not trying to flame or be mean, just being honest.

I dunno about your idea...other than you are dealing with an audience that'd rather drop ten bucks -- or any amount -- into improving their rigs. ;)

I looked at your site...all the flash stuff is nice, but the photos load pretty slow for me...won't help if somebody is having to wade thru a bunch of pics to find his rig. You oughta have more examples of trail pics, since that is what you are trying to sell.

FYI, check the spelling on your website...several goofs (especially important since the other website in your post is selling for-hire web design).

Not trying to be an ass....

To add: I had a friend that did something similar with boat (yacht) pictures, and was somewhat successful with it, considering it was pre-Internet days. Of course, it made a difference that his average subjects cost 100k to 500k plus, and a $50 print was a drop in the bucket to those guys.

Besides, in todays world, give anybody a P&S, and they think they are an expert. (And that goes for about anything nowadays, not just cameras).

I guess I see your point. I wasn't thinking of putting them in my portfolio as much as just providing a service for really high quality images at low prices. I guess I was thinking some people may want a shot or two of their rig and not have a way to get good ones.....

As far as the site goes.....It is still a work in progress as I am not sure if I want to keep using that script or do something different. Thanks for the honest input.

Thanks for the thoughts. And I will look over the sites for spelling.....Still working on them so somethings are changing daily.....

cool. yeah the sites seemed to be in early stages.

just know, i'm not bashing you here bro. i am an artist too (but don't tell anybody). if this is your passion, and you need to generate business, i feel like it would benefit you to offer something like: you come to a few rides, and shoot photos all day. then you get a waiver signed form folks saying "this artist can use images of my property as long as i (the owner of said property) has equal access to and benefits from said images."

i dunno, get a lawyer to write it up.

but my point is, do some shoots for free for promotional purposes, then use those shoots to generate more business. in return, those guys whose rigs helped you earn (or potentially earn) income, get some really nice free documentation on their hard work.

I think it's a fine idea.
These guys are just grumpy. I see Chuck's point about using people's pics, but if you don't plan to use them w/o permission, it's irrelevant. What you prob want to do is find a few pics you really like, and ask the owners if you can use them in the portfolio, maybe in exchnage for a print or something.

I for one am a cheapskate tightwad, and don't think my rig is "all that", so while I give a "for it" vote, I doubt you'll get business from me

EDIT - damnit Chuck beat me. That bastard never sleeps!

He would have no obligation to pay you for photos of your rig as long as the pics were taken in a public domain, such as URE. Just like painters create elaborate works modeled after the Eiffel Tower or Stonehedge or what have you, their subject is not entitled to any compensation. Moreover, he owns the right to the actual photograph itself, no matter if its your mom's bare ass on his canvas. I have a limited knowledge of media legalities but I'm pretty sure all of that is right.

i think you're probably right, i just think it's stingy of someone to use your junk for personal gain such as promotion, then expect you to pay for a copy of the pic.

if i took some awesome pics at URE and wanted to add them to my portfolio to show people, i would have no problem providing proofs or files to the owner of the vehicle if they wanted.

It is true that any photo I take is considered an original work by me and therefore owned by me to do with as I please but that is not the point here. I am not looking to screw anybody by using their heep and then charging them huge money for a print.

My concept was just to give them a professional quality image at a reasonable price if they wanted it. Some people that have spent a ton of money really want a nice photo to have of their project. I have seen this done with restored muscle cars and high end cars and just wondered if the 4x4 world would be into it.

I think the point of using an image in my portfolio and allow it to be used by the owner is a valid point. I really did want the kind of input this is generate.....Thanks and keep the thoughts coming.

Your post is definitely considered a vendor post. You have a business linked in your signature and are pimping a serice that you offer. Anyone else making the same post would be told to buy a VENDOR subscription.

You indicated offering a service and what you wanted as payment.

Any of the details that others have mentioned can be discussed at a later time.

I am sorry I will remove the post if you like.

my god, it's not like NC4x4 wants $100 or anything.. if you can't drop a few bucks to help get it off the ground, ya gotta wonder.

Rich - it has nothing to do with that. I didn't think I was posting as a vendor. It was just an idea that I had, not something I was actually doing. More than anything, I deleted the content of the post because of the attitudes of the people up here that responded.

This is the last I have to say on this subject, and probably the last I will have to say on this board. Thanks anyway.
