I decided to install a Ford 302 in my 89 YJ.

I'm in the process of collecting parts, Hopefully I will have it done by April/May of 2013.

This is what I am thinking.

I will be installing a Ford 302 Engine EFI, ZF5 Tranny & NP205 T-Case

Engine - 97-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer
ECU - 89-93 Mustang 5spd {A9L}
Tranny - 88-97 F250 w/ Small Block
T-Case - ????
Engine harness - Ford Part# M-12071-A50
Advance Adapters Motor Mounts
Clutch Master Cylinder - 1980 CJ with a v8
Clutch Slave Cylinder - 87 F250
From what I was told I will need adapters for the Master Cylinder end and the slave end to adapt a braided line. - No Idea how to do this, guess I will tackle when I get there.

Reason I went with this tranny/case combo was money - what what i read a lot more money needed to adapt ax-15 to motor.

Reason I went with the Ford vs the Chevy is money and the ease of getting EFI installed. Seems Adapters, harness for the Chevy are pricier than Ford's

Anyone suggest a different Tranny/t-case combo?

If anyone has a line on where i can procure items listed above, please let me know..

Any Help & Thoughts will be great appreciated.

my $.02-i would have kept it 6 cyl & used the ax-15 & 231 transfer case. use your 258 crank & rods with a 4.0 block to make a 4.7 with the factory 4.0 injection. low end torque would be even better than the 5.0

Being a Mustang guy and having built several 4.7 strokers, the 5.0 is gonna be leaps and bounds more fun to drive and much more powerful. You'll spend at least as much to swap in the SBF than you would to build a good quality stroker. Also, that 89 is gonna be carbed. That means harness, PCM, donor 4.0 long block, etc.
The ZF is a good choice so you'll have OD. If you really, really want OD and a manual tranny that is the best/cheapest choice. Otherwise a NP435/D20 combo would be cheap and quite strong.
Going auto opens up a few more choices like AOD, C4, etc.

Jody just hit my ideas at the end....C4 for cheap simplicity, divorced 205 for durability...

No way Id put a manual in an offroad rig but thats just me

FlatBlack, I guess I just want to modernize it.

Jody, 5spd is the only way to go for me.. I'm not rock crawling it.
Trails and mudpits is all I'll be doing..
Hoping to drive it up north in August of next year.

Also looking for advice on which bolt in front axle i could use to go along with my rear Ford 8

8.8 Will be installed by 4WP in Raleigh for 300.00 out the door.. At least that's what I was told.

AOD, adapted to a NP231 with a shorty SYE kit would be easy. C4 has no OD, so based on how much interstate driving you do that may matter. Gearing will have something to do with the choice as well.
Waggy 44 front will be close to bolt in. However, If it were me, I'd keep the 30, add good joints and shafts and not waste $$$ with a D44. You'll regret spending D60 money on a D44 one day.

Hey voz I've got a zf outta 92 f-250 w an open rear that's complete w transfer case an all. Id take a benjamin 4 it.

I'm back,
I had motor and a few other parts which I sold to another YJ buddy once I ran into some financial issues.

Jimbone I'm hoping you still have zf..

I have a few items for sale or trade here --> http://www.nc4x4.com/forum/index.php?threads/yj-fenders-bumpers-transmission.152781/

I picked up a 91 YJ, which is a much better rig for swap ( body is great)
Sprung over on stock springs, JKS tid bits, tracks straight as a crooked arrow.

I will be in the process of gathering my parts again..

Stay tuned as I don't know what the hell i'm doing!
