I've got a set of 12 bolt H1's with 5 point nuts fastening the 2 halves together. The last set I did were standard 6 point stuff like we all have tools for. The idiot who came up with this idea ought to be hanged. Anyone in the Charlotte area got the socket that I need???

I found this thread on pirate that should help you:

Looks like the socket is very expensive, but someone spoke about buying new hex nuts and them coming with a loaner socket. That would be much cheaper than buying the socket.

Also, craftsman makes a set of universal wrenches that will fit any type of bolt. Not sure if you can use a wrench or not, but that might be an options as well. I have these wrenches and use them all the time. Very handy, especially on the trail. There's also that universal socket with the weird looking metal mesh stuff inside. Might also work.

Not sure what size it is but I also found this 13/16 5 point at Ace:

Searching for "Pentagon Socket" also returns lots of results.

Get one of those "gator" sockets at harbor freight. It fits anything under like 7/8 i think. pentagonal or hexagonal, it will fit it all.

are you serious??? i've never used one as they look like a joke and be a waste of my money. anyone used one? keep in mind, these things are torqued to about 100 ft lbs and are probably not going to budge easily with the rust on the threads.

Honestly I'd buy the new nuts and do the loaner tool thing from bluehummer.com. You could try the gator socket. They don't cost much. And if the wrenches would fit you could torque the crap out of those.

100ft-lbs isn't much, and you don't have to worry about trashing the nuts. Put a little oil on the threads and go to town.

Alot of times it's not the torq. that's the problem, it's the 18 layers of paint. Wire wheel it off then hit with the oil then vise grips. If it rounds out the nut weld a bigger one to the outside and use a reg socket to remove.

tried the vice grips already. i may just use the angle grinder and cut some flats in them and go that route. fortunately they don't have much for paint on them (they were civilian not GI wheels).

the gator has never been junk for me. I use it when I know I will have to change sizes a lot. even if it is rounded, the gator will still grab it and turn it.

If the paint on the nuts isn't too bad I'd consider taking some hex nuts of the proper size, thread them down on the end of the stud until it is sitting on the pentagon nut, then weld the two nuts together. That should let you easily remove them with your normal sockets.

yeah they can be handy, but for things of this caliber (torqued to a shit-ton lbs. with lots-o-rust and/or paint) I would not use it. I wouldn't even use regular "chrome" sockets..... you need impact sockets.

and if its an odd-ball like this, vice-grips, p-oil, griders, cutters, torch, welder, bfh, (10ft. 2x4, duct tape :) ) are about the only options.

Run a normal 6 point nut down on the stud and weld it to the 5 point nut. Then remove them both off at once with a 6 point socket. Its half inch fine thread right? If so then use a lug nut since it would have a larger surface to weld on and leave enough area to get the socket on.

That is a good idea for 1 or 2, but I wouldn't want to do 48 of em.

Any reason you couldn't use flat stock and some large tubing to make a tool? I could probably even draw a 2D sketch for ya with the needed dimensions if I knew the size of the nuts. That would take the guesswork out.

I made a call to Hummer Xtreme and my friend Steve said the sockets are no longer available, the reason for the 5 sided was a liability reason. someone was killed when the wheels were 1st made and they changed to a 5 sided nut. He also agreed with what tknott said, weld nuts and pitch them.

12 point sockets and BMFH

12 point sockets and a big hammer, huh?? why didn't i think of THAT before?

it looks like my best option is in post 2- the guy that loans out a penta socket when you buy the new hex nuts from him. i'm going to go that route, since i will need the new ones anyway. thanks all.
