5 spd offroad "tricks?"

swap in an auto

i tried the manual thing for a while, and even though i dont think it ever kept me from completing an obstacle, i never liked it and was happy to et rid of it.

Go out and work on it in the rain. If ya don't have gears of some type, side steppin the clutch will be your friend. Firmly plant your foot on the gas and let you foot slip off the clutch. Great for birfs.

Ok, a followup...

Had Chase / ECGS install the trailgear 4.7 last month and took it wheeling this weekend. WHAT a huge difference!!

At one point I was trying to creep fwd a few inches to let off stress on my winch cable (no power out, nother story) and so I bumped the starter without touching the clutch at all...

And it started!! (tires slipping at bit / staying in place)... In fact I only stalled it once that I remember on ledge at Daniel

So yeah...essentially now it is like an automagic for wheeling purposes. EXCEPT, I can "gear up" as needed to higher gears.

So the low creepy 1st for inching my way thru the ledge before Kodak (crawled it, oh ya, no clutch at all)

Put it in 3rd gear for most of the rest of the trails (no real clutch slipping, just let it out and went) to keep up my speed to something decent.

1st is 3.93 98ish to 1
2nd is 2.33 58 to 1
3rd is 1.91 x 4.7 x 5.29 = 47.4:1 (basically what I had before)

This is what I was coming from in 1st
3.93 x 2.23 x 5.29 = 46.4

So I gained two lower speeds by having the 4.7 swap. If I did the duals I would have to be in 5th gear/overdrive to get the same as I was before.

At the moment, VERY happy with the upgrade, no driveshaft or other issues...and so far havent felt the need yet for a lower crawl ratio / will wheel it for a while to see!

I ended up using 2nd or 3rd to hit / bounce over the 1st ledge on Daniel...winched over the 2nd one and then I CRAWLED the ledge at RML / far left side of the rock.

No front locker...and not much flex in the front end / ended up denting in my oil pan a bit. Probably going to put in a motor mount lift for clearance / and allow further flex
