I think the teacher has the 2 confused.

A long ton is more than 1000 kg but close. A "Tonne" is 1000kg. It's easy to remember because it looks pretty faggy and metric. It's pretty ridiculous that there are three different "tons" that are all relatively close. I imagine it has to do with heavy shipping.
