6 dead at offroad race in california

hate to say this but i have no feelings about the stupid spectators to close.

my prayers go out to the driver and crew who now have to live the rest of there life for a bad choice that thay hade nothing to realy say anything about.

there is all these rules on driver / co pilot safty. but no major enforced that i see rules on how close thay can get.

heck look at nascar i know totaly diffrent but thay have huge fences laced up with steel cables and lots of other stuff.

we could go on and on with this but not going to matter. thay need to get them back and safe.

From another site:

"Because of the remote location, rescue units took more than half an hour to reach the racetrack, spurring spectators and racing officials to tend to the wounded and dying until help arrived.

The only way to reach the dry lake bed, a popular area for off-roaders, is a six-mile dirt road off California 247. Hundreds of camping vehicles were lined up around the track, housing both contestants and spectators"

WTF? How could they NOT have EMS on site? I know ECORS isn't allowed to do anything w/o them, according to their insurance policy - and knowing Rob/Ron, they wouldn't anyway. Not having anybody there prepared is just... stupid.

And, yes, agreed, this is really not adriver fault at ALL. Many of the reports emphasize SHP spending a lot of time trying to figure out what caused the accident... the truth is, it's irrelevant. The spectators should not have been there, inwhich case the accident would have had/needed noinvestigation, it'd just be another rollover like always happens in these things.

ya after looking at the video and other pics i come to this point.

1 guy walking almost in to traffic with open beverage in hand prob a beer.

huge speed in a super skinny road cause of all the trucks parked / spectators to close and loose dirt and jumps all = someone gona get hurt. :handed:

It's a dangerous sport for sure. The ECORS Q this weekend at Harlan had several mishaps that could have been MUCH worse. Just like anything else, gotta keep your head up!

I wonder if this will change how people spectate at KOH. Haven't ever been but from pictures I have seen people get pretty close on the rock sections

The way I see it if your stupid enough to be that close then your to stupid to live. I just feel bad for the driver and crew.

Dave, I believe its a 50 miles per lap event, so probably hard to have EMS evrywhere, similar to Baja 500, unfortunately is something happens your on your own....Prayers to the families

yep sucks that it happened and you can bet there will be lawsuits and charges filed, it is california after all :shaking: The government will at least hold the race officials responsible for not making it impossible for the spectators to get that close. TO many people not using common sense :shaking:

read on another forum there is a rule for spectators to be 120 FEET back from the course but obviously no one listens to that.

But the event promoters dang sure pay for choppers to have coverage/video of the event. Why not both or resources for a EMS copter?

EMS copter would be nice, or maybe paramedics where most spectators seem to gather, but remote race locations in hard terrain usually equals longer response time. Hell I thought 30 minutes was quick considering the location. Some of the people who live in the mountains or country have longer than 30 minute reponse times once paramedic/police are called.

If this was a short course , say 2-3 miles per lap, response would have been much faster and safer for spectators

Brad I know this is a problem given the terrain. Note, 50 mi loop = 25 mi or less between start and anyother point, and thats via track, not straight line. All you need is 3 EMS positions and any EMS is 8 miles or less away from any point.
it said that's how long to reach the track - not the crash site.

I really do not want to dig into the details, we don't have enough... now is not the time. I'm just worried about the bad PR from this.

x2 on the PR thing, this will be on oprah or nancy grace in no time. Unfortunately insurance companies who insure these events might start getting cold feet. I bet the guys @ KOH are starting to sweat bullets. Its really a shame especially the loss of life. I know that the spectators were too close, but still doesn't make it any less tragic. Besides who doesnt like gettin close to the action. How many times have we had that "close to chaos" moment while wheeling with our buddies. Just sucks all the way around

I know a guy who works for a race team that goes to all the big races, including the 1000,and he says it's a miracle 10-20 dont get killed every race, especially in Mexico.

Bad pr for our sport no doubt, def sad for those who died... I had just seen this on channel 9 when I started reading this. What really upset me is they said the driver is ok but had to flee the scene due to threats from the crowd. WTF I'm sure he didn't purposely plow through the crowd.... bad situation escalated by alcohol.....

You got to feel bad for those who died and drivers and crew members involved. ypu just have to give those guys room to drive at those speeds it can get away from you quick. Prayers go out to all involved.

I was watching the news earlier and they read the headline... "8 spectators dead at offroad race... more on that later". I immediately thought about all the guys up at Harlan. Im glad this was out west, and no one I know. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families though.
