Just a quick question about a 6bt I have: I have white smoke puffing out of the engine dipstick tube and the oil filler. Only thing I can think of is it being blow by. Are there anymore reasons that would cause this?

Sounds to me like a blown head gasket. Thats all the symtoms of one. Dang it.

I doubt its the head gasket. Wouldn't I see that in the coolant and exhaust? Exhaust blows clean until you romp on it, then it's just black as sin. And how's a blown head gasket have anything to do with white smoke in the crank case?

Smoke

the black smoke is unburned fuel, and smoke out the dipstick are symptoms of blow-by. have you run a compression test? does it seem to be down a cyl? (sound any diff. while running, idling diff). that would be first thing I would check. then maybe valve train if I was not satisfied. Just my opinion
:bounce2:

Aware of the black smoke, intercooler and possibly a bigger turbo are down the road.

Engine runs like a top. Not missing, pulls strong, idles smooth-nothing that would indicate anything out of the norm.

I've never done a leak-down or compression test on a diesel. Not sure how to go about that seeing as how there's no glowplugs.

Seems like most high(er) mileage diesels will vent from the crankcase...

When I had the 7.3L NA, that crowd added a hose that ran down near the road & called it the "slobber tube" mod.

When I had the 1st Gen CTD, seems like there was mod to use a different (oil) filler assy(industrial or 24V?) that added a another crankcase vent w/ provisions for a "slobber tube"

That's definitley something I wanted to hear vs I have to rebuild the bottom end. . .

I need to get more information on this engine to confirm how many miles/hours/useage this thing has seen.

Is it actual "white smoke" or is it just a small amount of gray haze? Pretty normal for a used ctd. As long as its not a constant drip of oil you're doing ok.

His truck should already have a road draft tube.

Only mod it might need is a length of old heater hose to get the outlet down below the body. The stock one stops around the bottom of the block.

Correct.

Ratlab-it's a gray haze, but it puffs out of the dipstick tube and the oil filler more than I would deem "normal"

sounds like you need a set of rings i would not worry with it unless you are using oil i.ve built many of these and that's normal to have blowby with alot of miles let me know if you need any parts might have enough here to build it

I appreciate it hillbilly27017. I'm not going to mess with the drivetrain for a while-I'll be moving soon and have enough on my plate. Depending how it drives when I get the overdrive in it, I may just rebuild the lower end and I'll get a hold of you.
