I have a 1997 CTD and I am looking to find a donor motor to rebuild on the stand while I keep driving my truck and minimize downtime when I do the replacement. What year 12 valve long blocks will interchange given I will use my factory accessories and manifolds when I change over. TIA

direct swap = 1997-98.5 - hydroboost.
close swap = 94-96.something with vacuum brake boost

The rest will take considerable modification, even though you can mix and match as the above posts state.

I have a 24v motor i would part with.......

I live in Louisiana for the next three years as I'm in the army so gonna find something here to work with but thanks for the info gentlemen

@Hurley just out of curiosity is the motor different as to affect hydro boost or not? If I'm just building the long block to go into my existing truck with all my peripherals is it still a consideration?

No difference in the actual engine, I interpreted your original post as looking for a straight-up plug-n-play swap option

all 94-98.5 12V dodge engines will swap out, the difference is that the 94-96ish engines will have the vacuum pump accessory attached to the end of the power steering pump. AFAIK there is no other physical difference that would hinder installation or rebuild.

FWIW, 89-93 12V's have a different injector nozzle size (9mm vs 7mm), aside from the rest of the accompanying peripherals... I know how people like to try to sell those engines.

A guy here in Louisiana has 98 2wd 12 valve with 99,000 miles that I know runs and drives and says he will let the long block go for $1,000. Is this a fair grab considering it's going to get freshened up anyway? Or should I ask for less? What would be a fair offer given I have to drive 3 hours to get it.

There are actually 2 different 12v blocks in the later production of the 12v. Encore vs non encore block. Encore block has 2 oil return ports in block and also has 12mm mains vs 14mm. Also has screw in block heater element vs bolt in thru freeze plug hole. There has also been some cases of 53 blocks making it into late 12v trucks. As to your last ? , a motor with 99k shouldn't need any real freshening up. Maybe few seals and gaskets but not much else unless it's had a hard life.

@Junkyard Dog the guy I'm talking to doesn't seem to know much about the truck other than the videos of it running and driving that I have seen how could he check the block to verify it is a good match before I go through with purchase (given would you say its a fair price?)

Well biggest thing would be pictures of pass side of motor and compare to yours. The oil drain is very noticeable and the difference in the block heater is easy to tell if it's different. But the CPL # is good to check also.
