Buddy of mine just bought a 88 F350 7.3 idi 2wd 5speed & he is looking for some info on increasing the power a little bit the truck is mainly going to be used for towing. Not looking for 500 HP but a moderate increase in power to tow.
you want ever get more than like 325 hp to the ground, but there's plenty of stuff you can do to make it pull allot better than stock. First you need to make sure the truck is cooling right as 7.3l are just bored out 6.9 and have relatively thin cylinder walls. You can turn up the pump add aftermarket fuel injectors and a turbo or smaller stuff like propane etc. I read something about taking the GOV spring from one of the GM diesels. google 7.3l IDI performance there's plenty of little tricks out there.
Yeah theres a few things that you can do to squeeze alittle more out of em but the results will be marginal.IMO (whatever thats worth) their not worth putting any money into.
I already mentioned the cummins swap. I think he would be happy with 250 to the ground & turbocharging the truck is this going to be custom-built or is there an off the shelf kit for the truck.
you could also build your own I'm sure or maybe some of the smaller shops have one. They will never be powerhouses themselves but for a cheap tow rig, 250hp to the ground is better than 125. ( i dont know what kind of gains turbocharging gives but supposed to be night and day on those trucks)
